exhaust too loud

I just bought a '71 K5 & it's too loud. It has hooker comp headers & duel glass packs. What is my best, quickest, & cheapest option for toning this down. Do I need to remove the glass packs? I have read that 50 series is quite. Maybe a resonator? It's a 355 engine. Please help w/ any names & models of exhausts that may work. Thanks I'll try to post pics later. Just bought some KM2 35x12.50x16 & black rock wheels.

Glass packs are loud and too raspy IMO. A quick and easy fix would be to go with generic "turbo" mufflers - most exhaust shops should have them. If you are doing it yourself you can order from Summit Racing. Flowmasters ar pretty nice but you pay for the name.

Nice Blazer, go with Flowmaster or Magnaflow both are good and will last. Put in yourself to save cash. Also, put some more pictures up of your new ride.

Flowmaster 50 series will quite it down a bit but you'll still hear it. 40 Series will be way too loud if you don't like the glass packs.

If you want to keep the glass backs you can add a resonator or some inserts like those from car chemistry. That's what I used, took my 40 series flowmasters from way too loud to loud but liveable. They did change the tone a bit but it still sounds like flowmasters.

The car chemistry inserts would be the easiest to install, just put them in the tail pipe and tack weld them in.

I'd stay away from turbo mufflers, they will quite it down for sure but you may loose some performance (I emphasize may, depends on your combo and such).

The car chemistry inserts will set you back about $55 each, flowmaster 50 series about $100 each. Resonators $80 (?). Cheap turbos $25 each. All plus installation. Inserts will be cheapest to install but I don't know if the labor reduction will offset the difference between those and some el chepo turbos.

If you go the car chemistry route, get the 3 baffle and install the solid plug.

Thanks guys. I did take it to a muffler shop today & they said the 3.5" tips are also making it louder. Those & the glass packs are welded in & will be around $300+ to add a muffler & maybe run the pipes farther through the tips to help quite it down. Can I cut the packs out & just buy the 50 series online & install it myself?

I like the sound of Dynomax Super turbos .I had flomaster 40's but they were way too loud.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the headers yet. I would try to find a pair of stock exhaust manifolds.

EDIT: I just saw you wanted to do it cheaply, but I still think this will be more effective than swapping the mufflers (although that will help too).

get the 2.5" ramhorns on amazon.com. there about 50 a piece. If you provide mufflers expect to pay 600 for full 2.5" duals. Glass packs are way too loud. pretty much anything will be quieter. Go on youtube theres hundreds of combos to check out.

I went from 2.5 40 series FM to 3.5 glass pack side pipes and it quieted it down considerably. Maybe your glass packs are just blown out and not doing their job. I like the tone of the new glass pack much better than the rattle and inside the cab drone of the flow masters. 50 series are a little bit more mild but a new set of glass pack might be just the ticket. I am not talking cherry bombs but a nice set of glass pack that are designed to quiet the exhaust.

Here is a video of the Patroit glass packs on mine with a stock 350. It is pretty mellow and does not rattle.
Oh and by the way I have the stock ram horn manifold.

heres an old trick you might try so you don't have to spend any money real soon. pull your tailpipes out of you glass packs,stuff them with steel wool like brillo pads or just some fine steel wool. then drill you a hole after you put your pipes back on, in the muffler and put in carter pins[holds the steel wool in]. and quiets down your ride. i friend of mine back in 60's had to do that to his car worked great.

I found a place this w/e that said they can put turbo mufflers on pretty cheap, so I am going to go that route for now. Hopefully that makes it tolerable.

Sorry for the noob question, how does the manifolds and mufflers affect the starter?

They dont. Thats the point. But the headers ride next to starter and heat it, so you end up replacing the starter more often then normal.

You can always bypass the gm solinoid and dare I say it put a ford solinoid on in a remote spot and never over heat a starter again with headers. I have done this on all of my chevys with headers and no prob since except i do have a ford part in my car or truck
