My goof for the day

Went on a dump run for the wife to get rid of a bed we don't use anymore. Had a slight problem on the way there:

Re: My goof for the day

Not sure why, but 5 of the 6 lugs let go and off went the tire and wheel. I still can't even find it in the dense underbrush. My poor navigator was freaked out!

Re: My goof for the day

Went back today and found my tire and wheel. They had cruised up into some brush about a 100 yards from where the wheel came off. The wheel seems to be fine with only a little damage to one hole where the stud snapped off. Any idea what might cause this? I knocked the rest of the studs out of the hub and they are just snapped off. Could it just be age? I'm going to get new studs and lugs and go from there. Oh and a new drum, this one is a little ate up from the road. Brakes are fine.

Re: My goof for the day

Sounds like they were either overtightened, or undertightened and they worked their way loose and the wheel was banging around on the studs. Are any of the holes wallowed out?

Re: My goof for the day

Cant tell by the pics all that great what wheels you have, But some of the older mag wheels used a special shouldered lug nut. Are your holes eggshaped?

Only one of the holes received any damage and that was just a slight scrape on the backside. All of the rest of them look perfect. I bought new mag lugs and studs today and the lugs still fit tight in the holes.

Hehe, thanks for the props, she's a definite 20 footer though.

They are slots, but none of the holes are misshapen or anything. I'm guessing I overtightened or they just gave up. I haven't had the wheels off of it since I put the new tires on and that was back in November.

You gotta keep your truck/blazer in good driving condition! Episodes like this and your lady will never want to ride in your truck again...

Re: My goof for the day

Tore the hub off yesterday and put in new studs then repacked all the bearings and everything. It looks to be in good shape for being 40+ years old.

How much thread engagement do you have on the lug nuts?

Nearly all of it. These are long shank mag lugs. Same thing I had on it before, only they were locking ones.
