NP 205 to 700R4?
I have a 1986 K5 305(soon to be 350)/700R4 with a NP 208. I was wondering if I will be able to mate up a 205 to the 700R4 or if they only mate up to a TH350/400? Reason for the swap, truck is going to be a winter 4x4, would like the bullit proof t-case, and kinda want the cool factor of a twin stick conversion.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
205 is for sure bulletproof.
700R4 isn't. See if you can find a 4WD 4L80E. They need an electronic controller, but they're getting cheaper with a lot of good used ones on the market. I have an '85 that I plan to run a 454/4L80E/NP205, going to use a wiring harness from a '95 and go with TBI, kill several birds with one stone. |

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
I considered putting a 4L80E in it, where I live they are around 1k for a rebuild with a core, a bit more than I would rather spend. However, I have not priced out how much a shift kit, corvette servo and hardened tail shaft would be for the 700R4. I would rather not have to put a 4L80E based on having to use the PCM/ECM from the donor vehicle, I may as well upgrade to an earlier LS engine with fuel injection if I have to, which I would rather not do(want to stay with a carb).

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
Gyawo, from what I've been reading you don't need the pcm from the donor vehicle, unless you were also running the motor from the donor. I am currently looking into stand alone computers for the 4l80e, which basically gives the electronic transmission the signals it needs to work. I think it's just range selector and throttle position sensor, which can be run off a carb throttle. Hughes, TCI and a few others make them, right now I think Optishift looks good, with a real decent price. I've been wanting a Gear Vendor, but I think I can do a 4l80e and a computer for half what the GV costs. And I know the 4l80e is tough enough, I pounded the hell out of one in my 97 lifted dually with a souped up diesel for ten years.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
Anyway, the reason I clicked on this thread was I'm trying to figure out what bolts to a 4l80e before I go any farther. BigBlocksRule, it sounds like you're going in a similar direction. What I have is a very low mileage stock carbed 454, and a rare 205 t-case that I want to keep. At least I was told it's rare, I've never seen a truck that old with automatic hubs.
So, my question is, will the 4l80e bolt up to both the motor and the transfer case? What about the crossmember, does it need to be moved or modified?

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
Funny that I stumbled across this thread today...I was just looking at Offroad Designs' website and noticed that they make a spacer adapter for mounting a 205 t-case to a 700r-4.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
The only thing good about the 700r4 is the lower first gear and an overdrive. If you do not do any highway driving the OD is not needed and the added strength of a 400 heavily out weighs the lower 1st gear of a 700r4.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
90% of my driving is highway. The 25km to work from my house is all 100+ kph except for the turn offs and a small stretch of 80kph. I will have to check out that link 2ndGenRR, I appreciate you sharing it.

Then depends on how much your going to wheel it. If it's only a winter get to where you need to in the snowy road conditions, then spend the extra money for the adapters.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
The 205 is THE desired xfer case, but the 208 isn't bad at all. I'd hold onto the 205 until the 208 fails.

Re: NP 205 to 700R4?
ttt
anyone know if my original 82 np205 with auto hubs will bolt up to a 4l80e? Do I have to change tailshafts or anything difficult like that? I've always heard 4l80s are built from a th400 platform, so it seems like they should have the same dimensions.
