Lowering '79 stepside how to cut bed rails??

I lowered my '79 stepside with a beltech hanger and shackle kit. I cut the bed frame rails to fit over the shackles. but looking at it last night I think there needs to be some structure to the support I cut. how do you guys handle this issue. I searched for some answers, with no luck. thanks for your help

Most people just leave it open after the cut. If your concerned with strength, you can make a boxing plate and weld or bolt it in place.

That is my concern, the box ix supported by the back rail under the tailgate, and then the next bar, the one I cut, then the bars in the front. So I am worried that I removed too much support, however that rear support is pretty damn beefy. I did a 4" drop, so I have about 1/8" between shackle and support, and that is without suspension travel, so I was thinking of just cutting it out. it has no support now that I cut it. Not sure what to do. if most people leave them out with no problem maybe that is what I will do
