Inner fender well firewall mounting locations

I am trying to verify the position of the tabs that hold the inner fender liners/panels to the firewall. They are now both in the same position but look like they should be opposite. The factory manual I have shows them in the position they are, but it looks wrong. See the pictures....if you have dealt with these, I think you will now what I am talking about. In the pictures both the passenger side and the driver's side are mounted the same way....should the be opposing? Thanks.

just went out and looked, that's the way they are my truck. On mine the left inner fender is inside the the tab, the right is outside. That would make sense too.

No, they both go the same way. I thought they would be mirrored but the Factory manual shows the legs pointing the same direction.

Wow.....I am glad I read this...I already "fixed" mine......
I better fix it back. Guess I would have figured it out sooner or later.

Thanks guys for the info. However the inner fender would go on the opposite site of the bracket from the welded nut...Not so?

That is correct. There is a rubber grommet that fits in the large hole in the inner fender with a 7/16 hole for a bolt and large washer, allows for some movement without squeaking. The rubber ends up between the bracket and washer. There is also slit weatherstripping that goes along the firewall side of the inner fender to act as a dust and water seal.

That rubber on the back end of the inner panels was stapled on at the factory. When I replaced mine I first thought about gluing it on, but realized I couldn't make it stay on the the curves on the rear of the panel long enough to dry and stay on. I used wire out of my welder (.025 solid) to re-staple it on. I ran about a foot of wire out and cut it off. I used the original holes and ran a fine pointed scribe through the rubber and through the original holes in the panel. Then formed a "U' shaped piece of wire and pushed it through. Then cut the ends and flatten it like a staple. It wasn't hard and looks fine. Also the wire is copper coated so shouldn't rust like the original staples.

Russ - good tip, I had forgotten it was stapled. I was going to use some 3M gorilla snot adhesive, but will just replicate the staples like you did.

You have it right but the exit is wrong (one can go by Sonioita but takes longer). If driving east on I-10 you take the Sierra Vista, Ft. Huachuca exit before Benson (onto the 92). We are about 7 miles south of Seirra Vista. We were one of the big fire areas in June.....We are not far from Mexico (obviously).
