Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

Huh?

I am converting my long WP motor to a short WP setup. I have the alt brackets, the crank pulleys, the WP and the WP pulleys. Can I use my old power steering pump if I change the PS pump brackets to short WP style brackets?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

John

I think the pump is the same, just the pulley is different. I do reserve the right to be wrong though.

Re: Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

I was just working with this problem.

There are two different pulleys on the different pumps one that is press on and one that is bolt on. The offset is the same though so you just need the correct one for the pump you have.

Some of the pumps on long water pump applications have a bolt hole on the lower passenger rear of them. If it doesn't it won't work with the short mount.

If the pump you have has the bolt hole on the lower passenger rear I believe yes you'll only need the bracket.

Re: Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

Check O'Reilly's, (or any parts house,) for part numbers. Try a pump for a 1971 c-10 and one for a 1974 c-10. both should be SAE fittings and not metric. Check rebuilts, if they are the same number I'd say yes. BTW, the same PS pump fits a 6 cylinder as on my long water pump '71! Yes, I did change it, the 350 was originally short water pump.
You may also have to look at the pump without the tank, 'cause there are at least 3 different tanks!

best wishes,

Les

Re: Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

Thanks,

So do you have a long water pump in your truck? What are you doing for a fan and shroud?

Stock fan, no clutch. Stock shroud. The change moved the fan into the shroud about 1.5"!
There is still about 4" between the fan and the radiator. Works for me

Re: Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

OK, I pulled the pump off my long water pump motor and took off the bigger bracket. There is a bolt in the back of the pump on the passenger side. I have attached a picture. Does anyone have a short water pump ps pump out of their truck that they can compare to this pic and tell me if they think my pump will work if I get short wp brackets?

Thanks!

Re: Will PS pump for LWP setup work with SWP?

I'm not sure how much this will help. The two pictures are ones that I pulled off of EBAY for a 327 sbc with a short waterpump. I have an identical one that I pulled off of a 1968 C10 with short waterpump as well. I just don't have pictures of the one that I have just yet.
