help identify my engine

2nite I tried to indentify my engine.

all I could find on the driver side behind the heads was this:

Am I looing at the wrong spot?







all I can see is GM 5.71 C

and I looked where the red arrow is...

Pretty sure that says GM 5.7L C which is a 350.

Hi thanks, for that. But shouldnt that be where my casting number should be?

Or is that in a different place?

You have a later style one piece rear seal block. That is where the casting number is on a 2 piece seal block.

1980 to 1985 350's have the same 5.7L cast into it and are 2 piece rear seals but they also have a casting number near that.

hi thanks, but my car is from 86 and dont see a casting number there. So I am wondering if there is anybody here with a 86 or 87 model engine that can help me?

Go by O'Reilley's or AutoZone and get a can of cheap brake parts cleaner. It comes with a straw, you can use it to clean all the greasy oil off of the block in that spot so you can read it. It'll be a ton faster than trying to scrape it off. Just make sure not to do it on your driveway, all the dissolved grease, etc. will drip...and let it set for about 10 - 15 minutes after you're done to let any excess evaporate.

I have an 86 block. Thje casting number is on top rear edge of the block, driver's side of center. Mine is a 305 so it may be different on yours.

My 350 is in the same place. Rear edge of the block (where the bellhousing bolts to the engine), driver's side of center. Pain in the behind to get to if you don't have a body lift.

can you see it from the top when looking down in the engine bay over the back of the engine between the firewall and the engine?

@sumram: if its a 86 model engine, please post pics of where yours is at...

Sure can. Just hose it down with oven cleaner or brake cleaner or something. Engine degreaser also works well if the deposit isn't too heavy, so I'd scrape all you can off of it and hose it down.

No problem, man. Hope it works for you. I tried engine degreaser on a 366 I was messing around with, and it worked for small stuff, but the heavy deposits needed scraped off.
