There may have been a problem w/ the particular power box, you had. IF anyone had ever taken the box apart, it's possible the re-assembly wasn't exactly as needed. The spool valve (it's on the input shaft side) is extremely critical to be installed correctly, incorrectly can lead to what your steering box reacted like...

The pitman arm is different when changing types of boxes. AND the flex joint on the input shaft (sometimes called a rag joint) is usually different. The flex joint also has what looks like a thin, narrow, piece of brass shim stock running through it. It is a ground strap the grounds the steering shaft.
