LMC Passenger Mirror '66

Hello,

I recently purchased a passenger mirror for my '66 from LMC. It came with screws to attach it to the door, but no nuts. In looking inside my driver's side door at the mirror mounting, there are nuts on the inside of the door, but I don't really see how it would be possible to get a hand/wrench in there to hold them while the outside screws were tightened. Just thought I'd check to see if there is something I'm missing, or if the nuts are welded inside the door or ?

They should be factory tack welded on several sides.

The driver side has a backing plate with factory weld nuts...welded to it. The passenger side has the same backing plate, but it does not have the weld nuts, so you will need a nut to back up the oval head machine screw. I have done this by taping a length of dowel rod to an end wrench with the nut taped to it, to hold it in place through the hole in the door shell behind the door panel.

tonys idea sounds good, the key would be to have 2 people and a good light.
you might be better off pulling the window, and vent window for better access...

We drilled the holes for mine and put trick nuts in it. The hardest part was getting the location just right.

I guess i was lucky my passenger door had the backing plate with the nuts allready on it. All i had to do was remove the screws that plugged the holes. When i bought it there were ( i'm guessing here ) tow mirrors on it. The kind that mount to the top of the door and next to the small mirrors holes. Just had to weld up the old holes because it looked as if they used self tapping bolts on the bottom.

Some were lucky they had nuts attached to the plate, mine did not on my 65 GMC. There was no mirror on the passenger side, i'm talking about the stock ones. Someone had put the most ugly coast mirrors they could find on both sides they went to the scrap heap. Finding the plate under the door skin was anything but a cake walk. I finally took the window and vent window out[not easy if things are rusted] then you can see in there a little better at the plate no nuts as I said befor but had holes drilled in the plate. Got a scribe up in there at the closet hole and pushed up on the scribe in the center of the first hole to mark it. I used a small drill bit in case it was not the right spot, but looking at the plate it was centered. Drilled it out smaller than a1/4 by 20 tap tap out the hole and you have one hole done put the screw in and locate the other two the same way. Take you time and don't get in a hurry, I did finally put nuts on them, but I don't think you really need them I just like insurance.

One thing I noticed after putting the window&vent window in you can't see out the passenger side mirror very good the vent post is in the way. There needs to be someway ti extend the mirror shaft a few inches? Any Ideas Guys? Thanks Vernski

You could get a piece of DOM tube the correct size and tap the inside the correct thread pitch for the mirror head stud. Thread that onto your mirror head and then attach to the mirror arm. Of course somewhere there you'll have to cut it to the appropriate length......
