truck trouble
1964 chevy c10 step side
230ci straight six Auto power glide Having some trouble as of late. My truck will start and run (idle normal) for about 2-5 minutes, then it just shuts off. It will start right back up and do the same thing over and over Again without fail. A little more detail. Thursday I cleaned up my dash a bit so I unplugged my heater switch, cigarette lighter, ignition switch, wiper motor and headlights... I cleaned around the bezels and re-inserted the harness on each. Everything worked fine mechanically the next morning. Friday I drove it normally to work in the morning. But in the afternoon it started. While in drive the acceleration just stops? The engine stayed on but my acceleration was zero? Then the motor finally died so I pulled over and checked things out. I noticed that my choke was still open about 1/2 an inch. Ever since then the motor won't stay on for more than a few minutes. I do have a little carb leak, and there is fuel in the fuel filter (3/4 full), battery good... Any ideas?

Re: truck trouble
My 66 that I had many moons ago did that and I found out the fuel pump was bad. When the fuel got down to a certain point it could not pull it from the tank. Filter stayed full but it would not fill the carb.

Re: truck trouble
I read a recent thread with similar problems that turned out to be crud in the fuel tank. The engine would work fine until debris plugged up the pick up tube, then the engine would run out of gas and stall. With the engine/fuel pump not runnning, suction in the line was lost and the crud fell back in the tank. The engine would then start up just fine and repeat the cycle.
You might also pull the air filter and see if you have gas in the carb coming out of the accelerator pump. The fuel filter may be plugged, so there would be gas in the filter but very little or none getting to the carburetor. And welcome to the forum! Last edited by markeb01; 10-01-2011 at 04:09 PM. |
