started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
thanks to everyones advice i snagged the 79 c10 frame with very nice tires and torque thrust wheels, prop valve, pow steering box, and front end.
i need to get the right non boosted maser cylinder. i have been reading about needing to extend the pushrod. thats fine. just want to know which dual resevoir master cyl to get for disk front/drum rear. also the 79 donor didnt come with a power steering pump so may i also ask which is the correct model to use with the 79/63 combo? thanks for the help again. got all the bits off the 79 tonight and now need to make some space and get the 63 in the garage. my wife is due with our second child - a boy - in 3 weeks so the project wont be done anytime soon lol! but i want to at least have things ready on the off times i can get in there for an hour or two. - jason |

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
For a manual master cylinder, you just need one for a '71 and up pickup with manual brakes.
As for which power steering pump, that depends on what engine you have? If it is a small block, which water pump, long or short?

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
All 283s had short pumps.
I just did the front suspension swap on my '64 using a '79 Suburban as a donor. Feel free to PM me with any questions. It's a really easy swap.

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
OK, so assuming you still have the short water pump, you will need the pulleys, brackets and pump from a '72 and older truck or a '68 and older car.
If the back of the water pump is pretty much touching the timing chain cover, it is a short water pump.

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
thanks all. i am reading that the 79 steering box uses metric fittings while the 72 and earlier power steering pump uses SAE. is this correct. i assume just a simple matter of adapters on 1 end to get hoses to work? anything special to note regarding the pulleys? the truck has no AC, etc just the alternator. sorry for the ewb questions but i am a newb lol
thanks again all. ps i AM reading all the other threads i just get confused. |

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
I had the exact same same problem and I found it much easier the go and get a reman pump for the exact year and model for your truck. There are so many different configurations and mounting options and different thread pitches that it is worth the $61.99 to go to napa and get a brand new pump. Plus you can have all one model gearbox, hoses, and pump so you know everything works together and it's easier to get parts later on. Plus, with a new pump, you also don't have to worry about leaks or internal problems.

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
i think i am going to go that route also. just trying to find the pump bracket and i should be good. man there are lots of different pumps - even for the same year truck. what the heck are all the differences? even same manufacturer has different ones at diff prices? not just reman vs. new.

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
Gm used the same pump for almost every vehicle, from camaro to truck, as well as from 250 l6 to diesels and everything in between. You have to specify your year model and engine size to get the right mounting studs and hose fitting for you application

Re: started the c10 disk swap - 2 quick question
Im not familiar with the 283, as I had to custom order a mounting system for my 250 inline. But im sure there are some junk yards that are overflowing with 283 parts that you could piece something from. Or use eBay
