Steel Wheel Trivia

I have some 6 lug steel wheels here. All are 15" diameter.

Some are 6" wide and some are 5.5" wide.

Anyone know why or for what application? They are all date coded for 69 and 70.

I'm thinking one difference might be for a front drum brake setup? Since discs were still an option through 71.

I think 69-70 had drums only and from 71 onward had disc brakes.

Re: Steel Wheel Trivia

Interesting, thanks.

I wasn't even aware of the 5.5" wide 6 lug wheels until I started messing around with these things. I had thought they were all 6". I have a mixed bag of both.
I guess I'm on the hunt for some more 6" wheels then.

Re: Steel Wheel Trivia

Correction - in reviewing several SPIDs, it looks like the Optional 16" wheels for the 69/70 Blazer/Jimmy were actually 16x6 that used the 6.50" tire, not 16x5. Maybe the earlier pickup (1960-68?) 16" wheels were the narrower 5" width.

Re: Steel Wheel Trivia

I'll have to look at my SPID. I still have the original spare but that's it. It's a 15x6 so I figured that's what the truck had.

Re: Steel Wheel Trivia

No mention of wheels on my SPID, just "chrome hubcaps"
It mentions tires,,,,,H78-15 highway

It does have something else interesting on the SPID that I never noticed before. I'll have to start a new post and ask about that.
