1970 K10 longbed step side retired forest service truck.
I have a 1970 K10 forest service truck from colorado. It is a longbed stepside 4x4. I used the vin decoder and found out some very good information, but would like to know more. They did not make many of these trucks and information on them seems hard to come by. I am brand new to the site and thought one of you might be an expert. Any information at all would be very helpful. The truck has a 350 and a 4 spd. I understand these were options. It reads 64k and some change on the odometer, could this be original motor and trans or did they come with something else? Is it a 205 transfer case? The truck runs and drives really well, however it needs some cosmetic attention. I would like to begin work on it slowly, but I want to know all I can about it first. Thank you for you time. That could be the original engine and trans. The trans if its a 4 speed will be the sm465 which is a good trans. The transfer case is most likly a 221 built be rockwell. Its a strong transfer case but parts are hard to come by. Hope this helps.

Re: 1970 K10 longbed step side retired forest service truck.
Hello, and welcome to the site. That sounds like just the kind of truck I like. The kind of truck that gave me the bug years ago, when out camping/exploring. You will only get so much info from the VIN. Does it not have the SPID (options list) on the inside of the glovebox door? If it is,is it legible? If your VIN starts with KE1 then it's a factory 4wd V8 1/2t,which would have been a 307/3spd standard. The NP465 would be an option as well as the 350. Does the motor look like it's been in there forever? Pictures may show if it's possibly a swap. The transfer case will be a NP205. So,you have a very good drivetrain. The front Dana44 axle will be the first year open knuckle and the last drum brake. The rear is a 12-bolt Corporate axle.
