I made a mess (flushing my pwr steering) how do i get the ATF out?
hey all, i read you can use ATF to flush your pwr steering. so i did. unfortunately theres ATF in the cylinder still (of the actual PWR steering unit). this is besides the fact that ive managed to spray most of my driveway with ATF. anyway, how do i get the rest of that shiz outta my pwr steering unit?

Take the return line off the pump and cap off the port on the pump
Put the return line in a drain pan or suitable container Have a buddy start up the truck and turn the steering lock to lock as you add fluid to the reservoir [make sure you do not let the pump run dry] This will flush out the whole system

It won't hurt it. It's actually a good little trick to run ATF in one that leaks.

I've ran transfluid in my p/s for years; even in my '98!

I had one that leaked so bad, I put used motor oil in it. It worked fine for months until I got a new one.

Auto transmission fluid is basically a hydraulic fluid. Power steering pump and gear box are hyraulically operated parts so it won't hurt it. If it's a big concern for you just remove as much as you can and refill with power steering fluid.
I wouldn't lose sleep over it as others have said. I've used it in my power steering before. |
