gas tanks?
What other kind of gas tanks can you put in our trucks besides blazer tanks, i was toying with the idea of putting a saddle tank in my truck and using the original filler neck just run it down and through the back of the cab because i like the way it looks and i want to make it look stock, what vehicles make good donors for under bed gas tanks, i was thinking of an 1980 up Ford would work but have not been able to check in on that yet.

My 67 I am rebuilding has a rock valley 23 gallon with the fuel pump inside. It is in the spare tire location.They are not cheap but it is awesome looking. You can visit their website at rockvalleyantiqueautoparts.com. Wootdog

The '80 ford would be inside the frame rail and should have odd angles and what not for the particular chassis. Not to mention the probablility of the sending unit being incompatible with the fuel guage.
A saddle tank per definition would be on the outside of the frame rail like the 73 - 87 trucks had, and IMO a bad idea. Then again, I think the best place for the tank is in the cab. |

Only if it leaks.
You'd have to be hit by something pretty tall, and pretty hard for anything to get to your tank in the cab. Sure, in an extream situation, the tank will get tagged, and yes, the fuel may well get on you and even ignite. However...in that type of accident, there is no real safe place for a fuel tank. |

LOL...the "thing" where it was mounted out back...right behind the bumper...with little protection...like everyone wants to do to there truck with the blazer tank?

yea like in the movie top secret quite a funny movie. i might put in a cell between the wheel wells. move the battery to the back too. but right now im just dreamin out loud.

LOL! I been saying it for a while. I have been flamed for it a few times too. (No pun intended) The only real safe place to put it, would be inder the cab and bed, like the aformentioned F-150, and all other brand new trucks. However, new trucks do not have 2 exhaust pipes, and mine does. (as do most of the trucks on this board) Not only that, but most of us can not or will not pay for a custom tank to be fabbed. If you can/will, then this may be the best way to do it. But it would be inside the frame, away from your face, and not rthe second line of defence in a rear end collision. Plastic or a poly-something or another would be the best material for those willing/able.
Otherwise, in my opinion, the cab is the best place. Some want to move it out becouse they have long legs...onless you are putting your legs behind the seat, moving the fuel tank will do absolutly nothing(asuming the stock seat is retained) I think the only 1/2 way decent reason to remove the tank, is for speakers...and I'll leave my opinion out of that idea. (having no A/C in my house means I get to listen to everyone's music when they stop at the intesection in front of my house...VERY annoying) |

I'm taking my tank out the cab after seeing a 72 year old man burn to death after being hit broadside. Tank in the BBAAADDDD idea!!!!

taking the tank out side the cab is better than leaving it in there. i work with jet fuel everyday. smelling bezene is not good. everytime you get in your truck or put gas in it, the fumes get in the cab. fumes = very bad. you could cause an explosion with a simple static electricity spark. putting it in the back where there is about 2 feet before it gets struck from dead rear is a better option in my opinion than leaving it in the cab. there are good points for leaving it in the cab but they are outweighed by taking it out.

Okay, you guys are scaring me. I have a tank behind my seat. I'm going to die from the fumes. I've got two saddle tanks outside the frame rails. I'm going to die from broadside accidents. All I need now is to install a blazer tank and I'll have the trifecta.

a true saddle tank...73 - 87 GM truck.
You will only smel the fuel if your tank has a leak. Seal it up and you'll be OK. |

Well mine are on a 69 C20. Aren't the dealer installed aux tanks saddle tanks on 67-72 trucks. Mine was factory installed and the fillers are on both sides of the box up high.
You may find someone on here getting rid of the aux tank in favor of a clean bed side.

i took out my saddle tanks. they are pretty heavy duty tanks but one is rusted on the inside from being open and the other had gas in it. don't know how old it is but it doesn't look good. i want to get rid of them but don't know what to do with the old gas in them.

a few people around here have taken a 76-77 monte carlo 19.5 gallon tank and put it between the frame instead of a blazer tank, but I feel more comfortable with the poly tank. I guess it puts the mind at ease a little beter then having a metal tank in there.

I PREFER TO GET THAT STINKY, TIME BOMB OUT OF MY CAB. BELIEVE ME... INSIDE THE CAB IS NOT THE SAFEST, MOST SENSIBLE PLACE TO PUT THE GAS TANK IN ANY TRUCK. (IF IT WAS, ALL THE MODERN DAY VEHICAL ENGINEERS WOULD BE PUTTING THEM THERE,.... NONE DO) IN 1978 A DRUNK DRIVER IN A BUICK 225 RAN A STOP SIGN & HIT ME BROADSIDE, CAUSING ME TO ROLL END OVER END 1/2 DOZEN TIMES (I WAS DOING 60) IT WAS DEC. 23 IN MICHIGAN, & THE TRUCK STOPPED ROLLING ON IT'S TOP. THERE WAS A LITTLE DEPRESSION IN THE GROUND WHERE IT STOPPED. THE BEHID THE SEAT TANK BURST, THE GROUND WAS FROZEN, & I ALMOST DROWNED IN GASOLINE.LUCKY FOR ME THE BATTERY WAS PITCHED OUT. I WAS PINNED UNDER THAT TRUCK FOR 20 MINUTES. I BROKE MY BACK, ALOT OF RIBS & A COLLARBONE, BUT ALL I KEPT THINKING ABOUT WAS EITHER BURNING TO DEATH, OR DROWNING. I used the same fuel cell that is in the bed, just put it in the frame rails. Summit for 175$ with sending unit.
