Oil canister to filter conversion
My friend wants to convert his oil canister to an oil filter. He thinks he can just buy the filter and throw it on, and I could have sworn that you need a conversion kit. Which is it, and if he needs a conversion kit, what is it, and where can he get it?

If it's a sm block 307 any good part store should have a conversion kit required for the canister to spin-on filter.

Yeah you need to buy a good conversion kit to amke it work. It only takes about 5 minutes to change it over. I will be doing the same thing on the wifes 283. It came out of a 57 Chevy Bel Air

Got the adapter kit for my 350 at NAPA the same time I got a filter; as said above, 5 mins. $12.49 for the kit.

Does it replace the stock adapter or do you use both? I've heard both ways, but I don't know for sure.

Got mine at NAPA and it went in pretty quick. I did like the cansiter type but it is just so much easier and quicker to change the oil and filter with a regular filter.

Two of my cars have the cannister and I like them. The only trouble is that I have to go to the GM dealer to buy them filters anymore.
They are a bigger filter so maybe better? I don't know.

I don't remember exactly what came off and what went on when I did the swap (1997). I believe all you did was take off the canister, add this adapter and screw your new filter to it.
