1 Ton questions
I was looking at a 63 one ton today. needs some brake work. It has power assist. But the canister is on the drivers fender I have not seen one before and it was almost dark. what is the story on these? are the brake pads and wheel cylinders readily available for these trucks? also my biggest concern was the tires. it needs all six. I'm guessing 19.5's do not come cheap. I have never had any but they look like commercial truck tires to me. all in all it is a pretty good rig. runs great I just need to learn about some of the heavy truck specifics before I get in the game. I really want one and would have pulled the trigger on this one. If I was not worried about getting slapped with 2k dollar tire bill.

Re: 1 Ton questions
As far as cost of 19.5 tires, yes they are commercial and they will last a loooooong time. so to buy a good tire is going to run $240 at the very cheapest and up. I run the general LMT400 it is an all position tire and it ran me about $1150 for the Four on the back of my dually. But I got 130K miles out of the last set.
I tried a cheap set of tires and they were (rap to say the least.

Re: 1 Ton questions
Yeah I just did an online search. Big bucks 1500-2k something to think about before buying a heavy truck. Man I want one though. Looking at that one did not help. I have been
watching a late model with no drivetrain.thought about doing a rebody. Now I might be looking at it just for tires. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1 Ton questions
You can change over to something more common like 16" wheels.
If the truck you're looking at needs brakes and such, I would just upgrade to '73-'87 front discs, and upgrade the rear end as well. The rear end is likely the Eaton HO72 with 4.57 gears. I put a 4.11 geared Dana 60 (from a F@&d) under my '66 C30, and I have all the parts for the front discs as well. It's really no different than upgrading a C10, just with later model C30 parts. Actually the front crossmember and control arms are the same as the '73-'87 C20's.

Re: 1 Ton questions
Might also verify with your state or a reputable tire shop if the wheels on the truck are legal for use.
63 original brake booster. ![]() ![]()

Re: 1 Ton questions
As for the 19.5 tires on the 1 ton you might check on prices of tires for 19" wheels, I think they will be less money, it might be worth converting to those wheels so you can get the new radials, of course it depends on what you are going to do with the truck....Kieth

Re: 1 Ton questions
That looks like the booster. Other than it was mounted on the inner fender. Rather than the firewall. It would be hard to give up the 19.5's once I had them. They make the whole truck. The reason ive been thinking about a rebody is there are not many 60-66 c30's outthere. But there is a load of no drivetrain c10's. And the c30 squares , running with big blocks and all the upgrades are so cheap they are almost free.

Re: 1 Ton questions
i like the C-30's too.
on mine i did just what captainfab did. went to 16" wheels and used complete front cradle and rearend from a 87 dually. everything just bolted up. i am seriously considering an overdrive trans to replace the granny 4, too low geared for highway. also used a big window air cab that started life as a C-10. i'd say go for it. no regrets here. |

Re: 1 Ton questions
I prefer the GMC's in a larger truck and 4x4. Tough looking truck with the GMC grille. Any pictures?

Re: 1 Ton questions
yeah, I prefer the GMC's pretty much across the board. I have a 66 burb, 76 p.u. and just sold my 68 so I could look for a 60-66 I did not get any pics. it was almost dark. I was buying some parts and they happened to have a truck for sale that I had seen before and was interested in.

I put my 15"tires on my 1t. they were 33x12.5x15 which I took of my 4 x 4. when first got the truck I had 36x15x15 cepek's on it 6 stud, themn I changed to the 33's with 6 stud and after I changed my axles over, 8stud, I just got new wheels for the same tires and with a 1/4" spacer they cleared the discs. sure makes the truck ride a lot better without those old tires. they fill the fender wells ron |

I didnt give any thought to what it would fell like riding around on those tires. they did have a load rating F . and I dont think that stands for fluffy.

Re: 1 Ton questions
if you are going to use it for carrying loads then use the heavier tires. if you are just going to use it as a driver, just up grade to newer std 3/4 ton axles and don't bother with the duals, unless you want the look and want to spend the extra for tires. duals wear just as fast as singles and twice the price.

Re: 1 Ton questions
lilred66 found this 63 C20 with the rear dual wheel option. Notice the coils under the rear. C30 had leaf springs.
