Hot starter!
So I have been having hot start issues whenever I drive the truck. Basically it cranks extremely slow when the truck is warm. Cranks up just fine when the truck is cold. Truck has stock manifolds and stock-ish exhaust.
So was thinking if I bought header wrap off ebay and wrapped the starter and solenoid in it, would this provide adequate insulation against the heat? More than likely I'd wrap the exhaust near the starter as well. |

Re: Hot starter!
is the starter itself bew? alot of times its not so much a heat issue but the solenoid itself is the issue and is on its way out

Re: Hot starter!
Have you made sure your timing is not too far advanced or that your starter bushings are not wore out first ?

Starter spins up like a new starter when cold. Timing is 6 degrees advanced. |

Re: Hot starter!
K I have owned GM my whole life and any time I have had hard starting when hot it has always been a starter issue of some sort or timing but your timing is good for sure

Re: Hot starter!
Well isn't heat the reason people install Ford remote solenoids?

Re: Hot starter!
Check Your positive battery cable too! I had a similar problem cranked like the starter was hot when the truck was at operating temp. After replacing my battery, starter and alternator it turned out to be my wire going to the starter was corroded and I think the heat made the rubber expand and loosen the connection. I changed the wire now it starts great hot or cold!

Re: Hot starter!
X2 for battery cables and connection check first. Big blocks are known for "heat soak", or hard start when hot - but small blocks normally don't have that problem on start up with engine warm. You can do a voltage check or take it to AutoZone for a free check of your starting/charging system. Vapor lock is also a potential problem on any engine - a carburetor spacer may help - but I don't like them because they change the geometry of the carb linkage/air tube, etc.
