Shaving Firewall

I am planning to clean up my firewall, but there is this large piece that sticks out surrounding my column and brake booster. Is it possible to get rid of this, and still use factory column and booster?

That things ugly as heck. Im in the middle of shaving my firewall and I did away with it. But Im using a aftermarket brake booster. It had 20 some spot welds. Its a nightmare to get off.

Really? My other concern which someone else brought up, was it does add strength to the column and booster mounting. So, if I did away with it, I would have to probably weld a thicker plate on the back.

Yeah. If you do away with it id def think about reinforcing it in the back. If I remember right the bracket has 2 bolts on the top of it that arnt on the firewall. Only 4 of the 6 mounting points are actually on the firewall so youd probably want to come up with a mounting point for the top 2 bolts. My cab was ROUGH on the firewall so I put all new metal. Its a work in progress.

yeah....I've seen some builds where guys weld some 1/8" over the whole firewall...makes it strong enough for the booster to mount to, and stays nice and flat, less bodywork..I plan on doing that someday as well..

On mine I just cut it way down- just to the outside of the necessary bolts and that column clamp. It's much less noticeable but still adds the needed strength and has the proper alignment of everything.

That is a good idea also, and really wont be as noticeable once the booster is up there, because it does tend to hide a lot. I think once it is grinded down, it doesn't curve out as much.

Do you have a picture of your firewall?
