1970 GMC cab floor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am in a pickle right now. I have a 1970 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd 8 foot bed pickup with rear leaf springs. I have had it for about a year and a half now and have been working on it regularly. I pulled the interior apart and got the cab off the frame a couple of weeks ago and found a lot of patch work and some not so great repair work on the floor. The rear cab crossmember is pushing in due to rust and will need replaced as well as the rear cab supports and the rocker panels. Is this too much metal work to attempt? I don't have a big welder. Just a gasless mig. Should I try to sell the cab and find one in better condition? Thoughts? Comments?

Only you can answer the "too much work" question. Being up in the NE- it'll be a stretch to find a rust free cab locally, shipping from out west will probably be your best bet......an expensive proposition. If it were mine, I'd get a couple sticks of 1" square tubing and brace up the door jambs and cab walls (fore/aft and side/side). For about $500 you should be able to get a full floor pan, the corners, supports and rockers. Take your time and stitch it all together....the flux-core will work fine, it's just a little messier (spatter).

Get the full floor shown above. I did one last summer and it went great! For the most part, the only welding you'll do is plug welding which is easier than falling off a log!

This is the way to do it right the first time. It's alot more work in the dismantle/assembly as you'll have to remove the cab but worth it.

I bought mine through a friend who sells replacement metal. Its made buy tri plus. I'd say it's the same as lmc, dont imagine too many places are stamping them.

You're in Maine.There are lots of vendors closer to you.No sense in paying for shipping from so far away.You could probably pick it up at Carlisle.

They don't have a high hump version but it's easy enough to make the change. I did this to the new floor I bought.
