Re: 283 4 speed question?

The combination in my '53 is a '62 220 horse 283, an SM 465 trans and a 2.73 geared Camaro 10 bolt. I can take off in 2nd normally without a lot of clutch slip and cruise 70 at 2200 RPM with 255-70 R15 tires. Like TV cop Hunter used to say
"It works for me"

Re: 283 4 speed question?

Ive got a 3.42 in my camaro right now with 28" tires, pretty good down low but also cruises pretty nice. Look into 3.55s.

Re: 283 4 speed question?

I've run a twin to that engine in my 48 with a M21 Muncie and Camaro rear end with probably 2.90 or 3.08 gears and it didn't have any grunt on the bottom end at all. The granny trans would give you the extra grunt if you needed it though.

You will probably be fine as long as you don't try to tow something too heavy.

Re: 283 4 speed question?

I had 3.73 with a 4 speed muncie, I did drive the truck on the highway, but it's turning a lot of RPMs. I would go with a 3.42 or 3.55 unless you will be towing or racing a lot.

Re: 283 4 speed question?

I was reading a old article on the 325 hp 327 yesterday in CHEVY magazine. the editor stated that most mid 60s chevelles with 227 m21,22 4speeds had 3.55 rears.

The T10s had several gear ratios so you might want to check that out also.

Re: 283 4 speed question?

That 30/30 cam will need a lot of gear to get going

Re: 283 4 speed question?

yes it does with the 30/30 cam ,its a wierd feeling driving if your gonna try and drive normal speeds. but once you hit about 3500rpm it kicks in ,no power on take off unless you dump the clutch ,thats with the stock rearend , plus running a holley 650 ran better then the holley 850 dbl pumper ,

Re: 283 4 speed question?

If you have a stock rearend most likely you have 3.90 gears as only the overdrive transmissions had 4.11's.

I ran a 1957 Chevy car rearend with 3.55 gears and a 1963 Borge Warner T-10 with close ratio. My cam was a CompCam with a 268 duration. The truck ran great back in the late 70's.

I would run either 3.34 to 3.55 to get both performance and crusing.
