Terry B is correct, tightening the motor down without the converter properly engaged can break the front pump (I've done it ) When putting the converter on it has multiple engagement points, the last one is the two slots on the snout of the converter (the bit that the seal rides against). After making the initial stab just slowly rotate the converter while pressing in on it and it will clunk in about another 1/4 to 1/2 inch. No worries about the flexplate that I am aware of.

Also if you dont want to pull the whole thing back out to seat the converter get a couple of bolts about 4 inches long and thread them in the bottom two engine to trans holes, remove the rest, unbolt the rear trans mount and slide the trans back to gain enough space to spin the converter. I've done this on several cars I expect it would work on the trucks as well.
