Charging system wiring?
OK, so I am wiring up the Cameo, and have everything wired except the charging system. How the hell do i do it? I know that the terminal on the back of the alternator hooks to the battery, but where do the red and white wires coiming out of the top of the alternator go? I guess I should have told you a bit more about the system. I am using an aftermarket wiring kit, that leaves out a couple of things (keep it clean) I am using HEI, and have purchased everything in reference to a 78 chevy so there would be no mismatch of parts going on! So someone PLEASE help me out with the final wiring step so I can fire her up!

Re: Charging system wiring?
Thanks! What I gather is that the two red leads connect together, then will run down to the center terminal on the starter. The white lead will go to the amp guage, and then to the switched poer source.

Re: Charging system wiring?
Most of the pigtails that they sell at the parts house for GM integrated alternators have the lead from the 1 pin setup to hook on the Batt stud on the alternator.
You most likely will have to put a diode in the exciter wire that goes to the ignition if it doesn't go though an idiot lite. Otherwise the alternator will backfeed the switch and the engine won't shut off. The last time I installed one of those alternators I used one of these plugs. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=342372_0_0_ Any parts store should have one in the brand that they carry if you don't have one off a doner car. I'm assuming that you are using a standard GM 10SI alternator. The amp guage would go in the red wire as shown in the pic in post number two, not in the white wire. If you have an amp guage you don't need the white wire at all. The white wire controls the indicator light in cars that don't have an amp guage. You don't need anything connected to post 1 for the alternator to work correctly. |

Re: Charging system wiring?
ok, so no need for the white wire, but if running the red wire to the guage, then the other end of that needs to go to the battery as well, or just simply to the guage?

Re: Charging system wiring?
Are you adding an aftermarket guage? Are you keeping the original ignition switch and the original wiring?

Re: Charging system wiring?
I have a wiring diagram that comes with a replacement alternator. It shows the white wire going to a bulb socket and then to ground.
THe bulb they show has 50-150 ohms to ground. They also say that the diode needs to be placed in this wire if the ignition switch will not turn off the engine. If you want a copy, send me your fax number, and I will fax it to you. Last edited by Coupeguy2001; 11-06-2011 at 08:37 PM. |

Re: Charging system wiring?
I don't have a fax, but I'm down in Chandler, so if I cant get it working, I'll hit you up. I am going with aftermarket wiring and inition switch as I will be running a 350 and th700r4...The guage will be original though.

Re: Charging system wiring?
OK, so its been a couple of months, and I am just now getting around to doing more work on the Cameo. I bought a kit from keep it clean, and it included zero conectors! The wire they included that runs from the back of the alternator down to the starter is 8 guage. I can't find ring terminals anywhere for this wire! Does anyone have a lead on these, or are you simply running 10 guage?

Re: Charging system wiring?
I checked 3 Home Depot stores, no 8Ga! they did have 6 and 10, but that didn't do my any good. Funny, I found them at NAPA, they had tons of sizes! I don't know why I even mess around with Autozone here!
