stripped hood hinge bolts.

has anyone successively heli-coiled the hood hinge bolts on the hood?

my finally stripped all the way and before I machine large bolts and oversize everything I'd like to apply the KISS principle and see if its worth trying a heli coil.

Thoughts?

one of mine was stripped and i just used a nut and longer bolt

A heli coil worked for me. I had one that we had to put one in. Worked fine.

It depends on if it's the hinge to hood or hinge to cab.

If its hinge to cab you could run the bolt long and put a nut on the backside of the firewall.

If its in the hood I would run a helicoil if it's just one, and if it doesn't work tap it larger

That's what I would try first. In 20 years of working in machine shops I have used a lot of them. Sometimes we even used them in new aluminum parts that hadn't had a bolt in them yet. Just be sure the thread on the bolt is really good!

Nutserts work great I have used them on my 31 Model A Ford, and we use them at work on Aircraft.

I don't trust aluminum nutserts to hold my hood on. That thing is heavy.

In all actuality, it most circumstances a heli coil is stronger than a tapped hole. I just wasn't sure if there was enough depth to pull it off successfully.

Nutserts come in steel also pull out is rated at 500 ft ponds when you multiple by 4= 2000 ft pounds. Also I used them on the frame for body mounts.

I used some inserts that I got from Grainger. The inside thread is the same as the Chevy hood bolts. They were steel inserts that had red Locktite already attatched to the outer thread. Just drilled out the original hole a little bigger and screwed in the inserts. Worked perfect.

cajundragger, We use the jergens brand at work. I prefer them over the helicoil brand. They have keys that you drive down to lock them in. Check them out.

well, not to be a cheapass but I have the correct heli coil already.

I'm thinking tho that I shouldnt tap the hole all the way through so the heli coil catches.

which would make the other brand easier to install correct? since I can tap the hole for the helicoil all the way thru?

whats the thread for the bolts anyways? anyone know?

cajundragger, The bolts are 5/16-24 (fine thread). It has been a while since I used a helicoil. I would tap all the way through and use red locktight. Wait for everything to dry and chase the threads with tap to get any of the locktight out of the 5/16 threads. If I remember right the helicoils are not solid so the locktight can come through to the inside thread. Hope that helps.

That method works really good. go easy on the locktite though most people use tooo much. I just dab a little on with a small paint brush.

I failed. the loctite wouldnt dry and hold the helicoil. It just pushed thru when I tried to tap it no matter what.

I'm not sure if it was the loctite I had or the fact it was 40 degrees.
