Fleetside differences

I just bought a 58 fleetside box and i wanted to know the differences in the sizes of the beds. My bed measured alil over 8ft long. I have a short bed 55 that I want to put the bed on. How much do I need to cut the bed down to get it to fit? Anyone have pics of them cutting down their beds? Any other tips would be great. Pics to come. Thanks

Re: Fleetside differences

It would be tricky because the bedside has a tapered spear... or "rocket"... I am not a metal worker but I would say that it would be more difficult than any of the other fleetsides.

There is a short fleetside box about 30 min from my house here in idaho. If you are interested let me know. I have thought about buying it but I have a long fleetside already on my 59 longbox now.

Re: Fleetside differences

i would try to find a swb fleet bed.
trying to cut down that bed would be really difficult.
although theres a guy on here that cut the spears out of his bed entirely so anythings possible.

if the front panel wheel tubs and tailgate are in good shape, then your ahead already since those items are usually beat to hell.

Re: Fleetside differences

You could just cut it to lenth and add the rest of the front part of spear to the cab and door. I seen a guy with a lime colored truck here somewhere that had it. I thought it looked cool.

Re: Fleetside differences

Someone here did shorten their long FS to a short bed. You need to takeout sections between the tip of the spear the the front and between the wheel well and the back. I would find the short sides, it would be tough to give it a try and end up buying the short sides anyway.

Here is the thread, this is kind of in the middle of the bed mods, it starts around post 207.

Re: Fleetside differences

that lime green truck was on the hamb (Hundreds Angry Men B**tching) and it did look pretty good with the mod.

it can be done (i have a welder and a torch, anything can be done) you will need to cut the bed twice.
in front and behind the wheel well, to match the wheelbase of your truck.
follow orrieg's link, the guy did a good job on his bed shortening project.
