How to remove engine - weird mounts?

My 1970 GMC 402 has mounts that I've never run across in a passenger car. Normally when I pull the motor there is a long horizontal bolt that runs through the mount, but this doesn't have that.

The mount bolts to the chassis stand with a single big bolt that runs through the stand -towards- the engine; unfortunately that bolt head is 'protected' with metal tabs that are tough to bend away.

The shop manual doesn't show these locks on the V8, and it shows the stands as riveted in (mine appear bolted).

I could alternatively remove the stands with the motor, but they're not that easy to get at either (by myself, anyway, since they're a nut-bolt combo).

Anyone familiar with this style of mount, and know the best way to get the engine out?

Thanks!
Dave

Re: How to remove engine - weird mounts?

I am not sure how BB mounts work. The mount you describe first is how all of the mounts I have seen are, but I have not messed with a BB. Are you sure that the bolt isn't simply missing? Maybe the bolt is gone and you can pull it out as it is.

Re: How to remove engine - weird mounts?

You have the 68-71 big block stands. Through the center of the stand there should be a bolt that passes through from behind. I think it is 11/16 or 3/4 maybe.

Have a look at the below diagram, going to have to get in there and bend the flats of the locking tabs away from the bolt head to remove the bolts. Mel

Re: How to remove engine - weird mounts?

i've always just removed the engines with the engine stands attached and then dealt with removing the engine mounts

Re: How to remove engine - weird mounts?

Thanks, that's what it looked like to me. I'll run out and try to pull it with the stands still attached and then deal with them later.

Re: How to remove engine - weird mounts?

For future visitors to this thread, I hoisted the engine after unbolting the stands from the frame, then while it was on the hoist (be careful, never work under a suspended engine) zipped them off easily.
