What can they take?
Would an NV4500 hold up behind a 390hp/445ft/lbs 383 SBC? Mind you this is hammer down and plenty of clutch dumping and maybe some power-shifting, and in a suburban. Same question for a 14BSF. Both being regularly maintained of course. Thanks, Bradley

From what it sounds like you need to buy a car. If you plan on doing all of that in a suburban you probably need to rethink that. Suburbans are not a light vehicle, and most of what you are wanting to do is just asking for trouble. As for what you are wanting to do yes a NV4500 will hold up. Clutch dumping will more than likely depend on the clutch you use, but you will more than likely break something or need to replace your clutch a lot. As for power shifting, the nv4500 is a truck transmission. You wont be power shifting with one of those. So like I said if you want to be doing all of that you are better off finding a car with a manual transmission.

In all honesty , If you engine has those specs ( 390hp/445ft/lbs 383 SBC ) dumping the clutch would never need to happen .

Thanks pd! Would you put in a full manual 4L80 or buy the computer and do the 4L80E? It doesn't matter to me.

Nothing can take abuse for long...in anything. The NV4500 shifts fast and smooth,nothing like truck 4spds. Yet the throw is long,nothing like a car 4spd. In my experience an NV4500 can't take nearly what the SM435 and 465s can take. I use them in my work trucks and have had to replace/rebuild three. I haven't had one go much over 100,000 miles and that's with regular oil changes. I've never had a 4spd go up on me and they were all in trucks that who knows did what before I bought them.

DirtyLarry's running around with a high hp/tq 8.1L big block/nv4500 in his 78 K10. It's putting out more hp/tq than your 383 small block for sure. The trans does fine. Yes it shifts better than a dump truck 465 muncie, but it is by no means a speed shifting gear jamming car transmission. Driving by dumping the clutch is just going to be hard on any trans. Not to mention the abuse to the drivelines and the diffs. A semi-floating 14 bolt is going to leave you on the side of the road or trail if those tires have traction and it snaps one of the c-clip axles.
It's your rig and you can do with it what you want though. A 390hp 3/4 ton sub still isn't going to win many drag races anyway if you plan on beating it to death.

Yea I know some people with built motors running NV4500s but not in any suburbans haha. 4l80e seems like a better route to go for your needs though!

I like my stock 4l80 setup in my suburban and I abuse it but not by brake torquing more like going through mud and throwing it in reverse quick and it grinds and did it a few times also dropped in reverse and rev'n to where it was screaming many times and ripped the wiring out and lost over drive for awhile but still going good but I don't recommend what I did because I wasn't allowed to get stuck only reason I did it but soon it will be abused by a 6.0 hopefully it holds up as for the semi floater yes it has c clips but I haven't seen a rear axle break not saying they don't but if you wanna get by for a while to save up for a FF i think it'd be fine

Semi-floaters have been good axles for me. I'm a full-floater guy from way back...had them in most of the trucks I've owned. I've had semi-floaters in three vehicles with no problems. I always intended to swap in full-floaters and never did. The truth is,I never needed to...apparently. Never heard any issues from others,either. I just like the bigger stronger stuff...by choice and perhaps not necessity. I have a semi-floater in my Jimmy and I will say it's big and bad compared to a 12-bolt.
