Saddle tanks in SWB?
I'm looking at a 1970 Chevy 2wd SWB and I thought I'd get a little feedback from my fellow board members. I'd probably get it to driver status and use it for my commute for a while, and then when I'm done with my 72 Jimmy start cleaning it up for paint and mild resto.
Asking price on the truck I'm looking at is $3200. 350 engine, th350 transmission. Looks like maybe a posi rear end according to the SPID. Mechanically, it is supposedly a driver as-is, but he thinks there is a valve that needs work. From that I'll assume the engine just needs gone through. I don't know the condition of the rest of the mechanicals yet. The cab does needs a bit of work (rocker panels and the passenger corner from what he's telling me). Needs a little repair behind the wheel of the driver side fender as well. I've yet to check it out in person, but everything I've seen (SPID sticker and matching VIN) indicate that it was always a shortbox. However, it appears to have saddle tanks... Has anyone seen saddle tanks on a 2wd shorty? Personally I'd rather they weren't there as the bed is in great shape otherwise. Just for kicks, here's how the SPID decodes: B30: Floor Carpeting G80: Rear Positraction Axle T60: Heavy Duty Battery Z53: Gauges AMP, oil, temp 504: Medium Olive BX2: Bodyside Mldg Wide-Lower G50: Heavy Duty Rear Spring M49: Turbo Hydra-Matic Transmission V43: Rear Step Bumper Equipped Z62: Cust Comf & Conv Equipped 632: Olive Cust Cloth Trm And here's all of the pictures that I have... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jakesau...7629135798287/ Any and all feedback welcome!

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
My 72 SWB had a pair of saddle tanks. The PO had not used them for over 10 years, one had rusted through the bottom.

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
Good to know that it is at least possible to fit them in there! I just hadn't been able to find any picture of SWB trucks that had them and started wondering... I have no idea if they are still functional, but the owner did say that all three tanks are there.

I'm used to topping off every Monday anyway! My gauge doesn't work in the Jimmy...

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
I ran across a short bed with saddle tanks. Pretty rare, but there are a few out there.

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
I never even knew that was possible! Learn something new every day. The saddle tanks I recall on long beds seem to go almost all the way to the wheelwell - so I'm assuming the long and short bed tanks are not interchangeable?? At least not in the long to short direction, I mean.

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
If I go look at it in person this weekend I'll try to take some pictures of the saddle tanks... I'd decided to pass on it, but he's playing hardball with me. Keeps lowering his price and offering trades. It's like he's trying to see how patient my wife really is with me!!!

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
So I broke down this morning. Went for a drive and ended up making a heck of a deal on this truck. Once I put eyes on it and saw how straight and original it really is, I just couldn't pass up the deal. I'm going back next weekend to pick it up and I'll post a bunch of pics when I have it in the driveway.
Side note, the saddle tanks look GREAT. They'll need cleaned out from sitting, but looking under the truck they look nearly flawless. Zero rust around the windshield, zero rust in the kick panels. Needs the rear cab corners patched up at some point (I have the donor metal for it already) and the passenger rocker panel swapped out. The engine fired right up (needs the vacuum advance adjusted), so no real worries there either. I took more pictures, but apparently had my camera set to low res... I'll get some good ones taken when I get it home. I'll probably start my first build thread on this one...

Thanks guys! I actually added a few pics to my album that I snapped when I went to look at it. Turns out they weren't all low-res pics after all....

Re: Saddle tanks in SWB?
Not that I've seen, but I'm certainly no expert.
