Re: qa1 ball joints,, explain what they do please

QA1 Ball Joints are really for race/performance applications. They are manufactured with a high level of precision, and superior materials to produce a unit that is very strong and reliable, very precise and consistent, low-friction, and yes, adjustable.

When I say low friction, you know how when you go down to autozone and get a ball joint or tie rod end, and you cant move the thing with your hands, almost like it's froze up? These QA1's, you can hold the cup in your hand, and move your hand as if you were spinning a rock at the end of a string, and the stud of the joint will actually spin around in the cup. About the only resistance will come from the viscosity of the grease.

When they say adjustable, the unit can actually be disassembled, and can be rebuilt. The adjustable part has to do with the stud. QA1 makes different length studs that you can place in the same housing. So you don't press out, and press in a whole new unit, you just pull the cap off the bottom of the cup, slide the current stud out, and replace with another that is the length you want to try. This adjusts primarily roll center location as well as your camber curve. Probably $30-$40 per stud.

In my opinion, if you REALLY want to get serious, something from these guys is what you want:

QA1 is definitely a big step up, but Howe is the cream of the crop, IMO.

Re: qa1 ball joints,, explain what they do please

Just got my qa1 ball joints in the mail yesterday. They say race only applications an so far on their site or on summit it says this nowhere or has a single mention of it :/ so that's concern one. It also says on their paper to adjust preload and rebuild every 2000-2600 laps. Are these things made out of dough then?

What does adjustable preload mean and do as well?
