Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

OK Well iI just finished trying to cut my own whitewall, and let me say this....NO THANKS! Not happy with the results, very messy, smelly, did not look any kind of consistant at all, no matter how much I worked the sidewall. still waiting to hear back from the west coast for a price on 4 B.F Goodrich's with them cutting the w/w"s, otherwise I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and get the real deals. I think PARKWOOD hit the nail on the head! it"s all about ME being happy....(THATS WHAT MY WIFE SAYS TOO)

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

I used a grinder to make 2 of mine, they were OK but not to my standards. I recently scored 4 nearly new Cokers, 215/75/15 and mounted them up today. Much better, I'll try and grab some pictures tomorrow.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

Go to Jegs.com they have Coker BFG wide whites at a better price then Coker and way lower shipping.

I just went to Cocker Tire and looked up my tire BF Goodrich Silvertown wide white. Here's how it priced out $289 + tax $27.69 + shipping to Shasta Lake, CA $40.71 Total of $357.40

At Jeg's its $272 + shipping $ 9.99 total = $ 281.99

Here's a pic of my 235/70r15 Coker I got from Jeg's. My Fronts are 215/70r15's.

Any pictures of your attempts at making them? No shame in it- you tried. I was wondering about the finish the guys in those youtube videos were getting.

(And G&R.... those look pretty nice!)

Coker bought Wheel Vintiques a California based company may be the reason. Or now that Cali went after Amazon to collect CA Taxes maybe Coker has to also.

Just my opinion!
Hey now H.I. are you talking about me and my old rust farm truck with new white walls

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

If you can accept a 235/75/15. good year Wrangler radial. I think it only comes in that size. it is a white letter tire and when ground down it has a 2.5" whitewall. It is a $89 tire. good looking tread too. I went with goodyear 3" wide whites they were $249 a tire. I dont drive the truck that much and i think they fit the truck better. also a 235 was way to big for me.

That is the equivalent to the stock size... So I have been told.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

Masshole- what are you unhappy with?..... it appears in the picture, that it's not a perfectly round circle- some flat spots. Looks like there is one spot on the left side of the photo where you dug in a little? On a galloping horse, I think those would look great!

Maybe not if you're looking for show quality, though.

What's the texture like? Can you get it smooth, or can you see grinder marks and such?

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

For those thinking about "white wall inserts" or "porta-walls", they are not recommended for use with radial tires. I've been told by folks that used them anyway that they weren't happy with the results.

My Coker Classics, they were a little dirty from being stored outside, but the look suits the truck.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

I've run the same porta wall for years on the back of my truck 50 and 70 series tire with no problem. They will fool a person even up close. There is not much weight on the rear. But up front they were good for maybe two seasons of driving. More weight and side wall flex stretches the flapper and one day they start flying off. So I put cokers on the front.

Re: tire time....wide whitewalls $$$$$$$

I ground my own. These are 235/65/17. Not exactly happy with the results, but try finding a reasonably priced 17" WWW. The white doesn't go all the way to the rim, and is a little wavy on the edges. These tires are for mock up though, I may just go blackwall with the "real" tires.

texture is not bad, the white rubber is inconsistant in some areas, and the white rubber does not go all the way to the edge off the rim. I like to say that I am building a driver more than a show truck, but at the end of the day, with all the time and money invested into this project, it is going to be more like a family heirloom... yes there are some flat spots, and I did dig in a little deep in one spot, so at a cost of FREE for the "ko" tire I did not chuck my grinder across the shop, but if i did that to a new tire well...
