Gas mileage
My trucks aren't my daily's so gas mileage doesn't really concern me. But I was thinking about it today on 4x4 vs 2x4.
If a 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive is the same in every way drive train wise (engine, trans, tires, ratio, long box) as a 3/4 K20, would the mileage be pretty much the same as long as the 4x4 wasn't engaged? Or is there some drag with the front differential even when freewheeling that would cause a significant difference? And I imagine the same would hold true (whatever that is) if we were talking half tons.

Re: Gas mileage
Gotta remember that you've got the extra weight of the transfer case, front axle / differential, and driveshaft to carry around - even when disengaged. Then there's the power needed to turn everything.
Back when manual hubs were "in", you could eliminate a good bit of the parasitic drag, and only the weight was the issue - now everything is automatic, so the parts are turning all the time. |

Re: Gas mileage
^^ What he said, though I believe most newer 4x4 rigs have some sort of front-axle disconnect mechanisms.
Also, many trucks (newer ones maybe not so much) have additional aero drag from sitting a little higher.

Re: Gas mileage
The fact that with these 4wds,even in 2Hi,the engine is turning the transfer case makes them get slightly less mileage.

Re: Gas mileage
you still have he front diff resistance compared to just bearings turning on spindles

Re: Gas mileage
With locking hubs (unlocking is more accurate) the wheels don't turn the axles/differential. The tires just spin on the wheel bearings like a 2wd.

Re: Gas mileage
So over all probably not a huge difference, that is what I'm getting from the comments.

Re: Gas mileage
My buddy's K20 has the same 350/350 setup as my C10, and we get pretty similar mileage. He doesn't do quite as good as I do but he's not far off.
