How many run windage trays?

I have one I can install, but do not know if it is needed or not. Do you run them? Do they make HP or cost us HP or just no effect?

Re: How many run windage trays?

A widage tray is a definate plus to help strip the oil that wants to rope around the crank. It is lost HP for sure. But if you don't hve some place for that oil to go,, it has marginal effects. A pan that offers someplace for that oil to return to the pan that packs up against the passengers side pan rail will return WAY mor HP than just a windage tray for sure.

I run trays in conjunction with scrapers. They have proven to be worth a couple of horsepower when running a stock 4-quart pan on my big block Chevrolets.

More importantly, though, they help keep more of the oil in the sump where it can be picked up by the pump, as compared to not having a tray and scraper.

Big pans help, on all the aluminum pans I have messed with we left the screen in. Some people think its better without them, but we have had great luck with them.
