gas tank location... where?

Time to decide where to put the gas tank(1958). Do I keep it in the cab or move it to under the bed? Let me know which you prefer and why?

Re: gas tank location... where?

I have mine under the bed.
No more gas odors in the cab, plus gain extra storage behind the seat.
being under the frame, fills up unused space plus, helps transfer weight to the rear end.

I haven't done mine yet but I absolutely will. Burning to death trapped in a wrecked truck is NOT my idea of the way to go!

The rubber hoses that connect the tank to the fill & breather tubes are usually hard as a rock after 50 years and shatter in a significant collision spewing gas all over the interior. Mate that up to the typically compromised 50 year old wiring insulation and its a no brainer for me.

Chuckdriver did his using a generic tank from Tanks, Inc and I plan to copy his install:

See HERE for how he did his. First rate job! Post #114 for a photo and somewhere in his thread is a discussion of the parts he used and a photo of the filler.

^^ ditto. I have a poly cell under the bed - the weight is useful and I'd much rather have it back there of something bad were to happen...

'66-70 mustang tanks are popular in these trucks. They're cheap, and have the fuel fill on the top.

Re: gas tank location... where?

Ray,
Your install looks smart. Did you get a junkyard tank or did you buy a repopped tank?

Looks like you just cut a short section out of the filler tube and reattached the ends with a rubber hose & clamps. Is that correct?

Does the vent tube actually send much gas to the "Fluid Separator" i.e. Radiator overflow tank? I'm wondering if you ever have to drain it or if it just catches minor slosh that evaporates?

frame mount is the way to go. My first choice would be a panel tank, they are as rare as hen's teeth. I have a tank from no limit engineering. Little pricey. Some have used the mustang tank with good results.

Re: gas tank location... where?

Dan,
Thanks, I bought a new tank from an on-line auto parts retailer. can't remember who.
and yeah, just cut out a section of filler neck and used rubber hose and clamps to reattached. Boy! that section of fuel filler hose was pricey, as I remember it.
And I am sure that liquid fuel gets into the overflow bottle, which is why the tank vent line goes into the very bottom of the bottle and the bottle vent is at the very top. That way the liquid can reflow back into the tank as the pressures equalize.

Poly tank from Tanks for early 50's Ford passenger car. Relocate rear crossmember to rear of frame for easy fit. 17 gallons. I wanted a fill door in the driver rear fender that would fill easily, not in the bed.

Re: gas tank location... where?

I relocated mine to the rear frame under the bed useing a poly tank, I'll be building a custom alum one soon just because I always seem to change my mind after I get something accomplished

I figured that I get more cab space for seats/ consol/ speakers/ storage, no gas fumes as I drive around on a nice hot sunny day and the big one for me is that it's safer. I'm not so worried about being snuffed out in a naplam like fire ball if I was in a huge accident, it's living through the aftermath if I survive.
just my 2 cents

I like ChuckDriver's and Ray's but yours has some VERY nice features too. Best is the cross member relo makes you still able to have a receiver hitch in it - I could use that.

BTW, is that frame powdercoated? Cause if its not I want to know what kind of paint that is? Thick and glossy, looks awesome.

Re: gas tank location... where?

The roll pan license plate will cover the receiver hitch when not in use and I might never use it but I decided it should be there, especially invisible, if I ever want to tow something. Yea, I sprung for the powder coat.....and I love it. I'm running EFI and the Tanks folks have an in tank HP fuel pump that bolts right in to that tank. That sold me!

Re: gas tank location... where?

I have a repoped blazer tank from a 87-90 fullsize at the rear of mine, I think it was also in a tech article in one of the truck books a few months back, its a little big but fits nice, If your doing fuel injection get the 87-90 if not get a little older one for the mechanical pickup.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Re: gas tank location... where?

That's the one, I made my own straps out of some 2" strap material and old bike tubes to insulate the tank worked out pretty good
