How much vaccum is needed for my wipers to work.

I have a 1951 JS code 1 ton pickup. I am in the process of cleaning the wiper motor up and getting as much as i possibly can out of the factory wipers. The motor is a 235 (1957) and it has some wear, but it holds 18 lbs of steady vaccum, other than when you stab the pedal. I know the electric set up is the way to go, but I would rather stay with the vaccum wipers. That would be one less thing to worry about on the electrical system .

Re: How much vaccum is needed for my wipers to work.

16-18# is fine, but when you open the throttle the wipers will pause, pain on long hills or passing. I grew up driving these trucks in western Oregon in the 60's, got real good at letting up for a couple of swipes on the hills. The old trucks had them mounted exposed above the windshield with a lever so you could over ride them manually! I once had a motor go bad and the girlfriend got to use a hanger attached to the arm with her arm hanging out the passenger window on the trip back from the coast. Funny now, I think she left me for someone that had a newer car....

get something like this and put it under the dash.

it helps with the lag issue.

Re: How much vaccum is needed for my wipers to work.

I just got through rebuilding/ cleaning , so far very good. They actually are really fast- as fast as the previous electric wipers that we put on my 55 some time back. . Question am i suppose to be able to control the speed by the switch setting -- Cause mine does.depending on where I set the switch -i get a slower or faster speed - My 55 from years back had only one speed .
I also replaced all of the bushings in the wiper arms and trans with polymer type bushings / and really cleaned, oiled , and polished the shafts .
I have not gotten the reserve canister yet- but I will.

Re: How much vaccum is needed for my wipers to work.

Not yet , I think the old AC # was AC6603, but the Airtex #is 4666 for the 261 (1963 model) the airtex, and ac 6603 is actually for the 230-292 ,but they will all interchnge. And I intend on swapping in a 250/200r 4 combo . Has anyone used one along with the wipers - I assume it makes them work even better???
