New door handles for locks?
I just got new door lock cylinders for my 64 and they work fine for opening and closing the doors, but they won't lock. I have disassembled and reassembled both driver's and passenger's sides a few times trying to get it to work and I keep coming to the same problem. The spring compressing cover on the top (the one right under the retaining ring) is slotted and has tabs on both sides to seat it properly in the handle. The slots catch on the lock cylinder like it should, but the tabs on the side won't let it spin, so I can't turn the key. Do I have to get new door handles to make it lock? If so, which ones should I get? I looked at LMC and they only offer one and I don't want to go through the trouble to get it off and apart to find out this one doesn't work, either.

Re: New door handles for locks?
Did you put aftermarket locks in OEM handles? I have heard of alot of problems with this. In my experience...aftermarket locks go with aftermarket handles, and oem locks with oem handles.

Re: New door handles for locks?
They were the handles that came with the truck, so I assume they're OEM and the locks are aftermarket. I think I need to get new handles.

I put new locks in my original handles and they work fine. I got mine from classicparts.com

Re: New door handles for locks?
Im not saying everyone will have problems with aftermarket locks in OEM handles, but there seems to be a trend in it. I dont know why though, but Ive heard it from a couple people in the last few months.

Re: New door handles for locks?
My original outside door handles were replaced with aftermarket handles and locks. The locks worked okay, but the inside of the handles were cast differently than the originals. When depressing the lock button it would actually go in far enough to latch inside the handle hole. OEM handles would not allow this. It’s been too many years ago to remember the details, but I know I added some combination of washers inside the handle or lock/button assembly which prevented the buttons from getting stuck inside.
And of course being aftermarket the chrome started pitting within a year, in spite of being waxed regularly.
