Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
Lots of variables we need to know about. Did you change bell housings and now it's not working? Did you change out transmissions? Automatic or standard tranny? Did your starter just go out and now you can't get the new one to align right?
Thanks.

Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
hi,when i got the truck it had no motor/trans,but was a 3 on the tree, and i think it had a 283 due to the mount perches that remained,i purchased a 3 speed trans and bellhousing, and got another engine [454] and when i mated the 2 pieces i saw that the flywheel was to large etc,so i then purchased a smaller [11" set up] and had to grind a lil bit off the top of the starter housing on the bendix end, cant get the starter to rotate enough to get more clearance, thats whats going on at the moment,is a car bellhousing different than a trucks ???this should work, and yes i plan on getting a 4 speed ,thanks and please help !!!

Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
If I'm not mistaken. I think the Rat motor starter needs to be shimmed during installation. The mouse motor doesn't require shimming. They all bolt up nicely but you'll probably need some shimming... Just my 2 bits

Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
hi,tried to shim but that made the sarter to far backward and it then would not engage the flywheel,i need mare clearance between the pinion and the flywheel, was wondering if this bell is from a 6 cyl ??? are the starters in same location on those ??? or how are they different ???

Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
Don't have an answer for you. Sorry. I would "assume" though, that a 6 cyl bell would not fit onto the 454 block.... Wish I could help you out..

Re: 1963 chevrolet truck starter woes
I used my 283 Bell on the 350 I dropped in. Had no starter issues... I know the BB are a different beast. I'm sure you combination is off. You may still have a improper flywheel? You shouldn't have had to grind anything to get your starter to fit.... I'm hoping one of the Big Block guys here will chime in.... Good luck!
