The drivers door should have captive nuts for the mirror but it sounds like someone removed them. The passenger side door usually never had them. You will have to drill the holes and use nuts and washers to mount your mirrors. I just went through this a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately the nuts were still there on my drivers door but I had to drill the passenger door. You can see where the holes go from inside the door.
