I'm really not a fan of long beds, and even less appreciative of dually fenders.

There's a pretty nice 14 bolt rear-end build-up article in the new (May 2012) Diesel Power Magazine. I'll probably duplicate that build with the addition of adding a step to narrow the rear axles and housings.

I bought the C10 yesterday, I'll trailer it to Yuma on Friday and get a pic or two of the starting point.

The airbag platforms, I think, might limit how narrow I can go with the rear axle in order to get a full tuck with a set of rear duals inside the bed. The footprint of the bags is directly related to the load capacity of the bags. Since I plan to use it as a tow vehicle, I really can't go small.

Time, and a little blood on the knuckles, will tell.

so, do a rear like dinos pro-street truck? then use dually wheels/tires instead of the m/t sportsmans?

A few minor tweaks here and there and it's dead-on.

This project will take a while though. Nowhere near the pace of some other builds I have seen on here.

I'm always split between three locations. I have a house in Yuma, but I live in Hawaii for the next couple years, and make frequent trips to Cali.

So I'll probably build the rear end on my workbench in HI, followed by the engine. I need the engine built before the chassis so I can dial in the front suspension to the installed weight of the powerplant. All of these will have to be boxed and shipped back to Yuma when completed so I can Finish up the chassis and body as the last 1/2.

Welcome 55reasons! Sounds like an awesome project, hope you start a build thread once you get to that point. Aren't you also on thesamba.com? I'm "theastronaut" over there as well. It always amazes me the amount of guys on here that are also into VW's! I guess you know that 22.5 wheels can be machined down to 22's for a wider selection of low profile tires?

Yep, well you know The Samba is the be-all, end-all VW resource!

This project is actually another VW-related one. I'm half-done building my single-wheel trailer to carry my 50 BMW R25 behind the bug. Now I need a trailer that will fit that whole mess, and this is the truck that will pull it all. ...All eggs in one basket.

I'll start a build thread when I get there!

...and yes, I've been hawking a good set of Alcoas to machine down. I'm assuming, based on my current research, that because I'll be running 8 to 10 lug adapters, that I need to lock on lug-piloted versions since I can't imagine getting a hub-piloted wheel being able to bite down when there's a wheel adapter in the way.

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you have a very interesting build planned. Narrowing the FF14 bolt is not that uncommon with the 4x4 crowd. You might find some info there. I believe you can buy custom length axles for the 14 bolt as well. Maybe Moser?

Since you are planning on running 10 hole wheels, you might consider the Dana 80's that come under some of the larger motorhomes with the 19.5 wheels. They are 10 bolt already. The front rotors on those have only 5 wheel studs. Those might be able to be used as well. The F450's and 550's might be a source for a rear differential also. Just an idea.

Picked up the truck on Friday for $1,000, towed it into town.

Saturday:
Gutted the interior of all the rats nests and old fabric and vinyl.
Chopped out all the wood from the bed.
Swapped on a GMC hood.
Removed the fuel tank from the cab.

Good: The bed is super straight. No rust, not even a dent on the inner fenderwells.

Bad: Small spots of rot on both sides of the cab down low. Matching rust in the common area on the lower fenders.

Gonna throw up the original hood, fuel tank, and jack springs, tabs from under the drivers seat for sale on Craigslist.

I'll be looking for a cleaner set of doors in the near future.

I think I like the SBW!

Looking for a set of Toyota wheels to use for rollers.

I'll start a project thread for it at this point.

But anyway, some photos:

What makes a "Custom Cab"?

I forgot to mention.....

The rear bumper isn't a home made one. It's got a manufacturing tag on it.
My neighbor remembers them when they were new.
It fits great, but I have no use for it.
It will be going up in the classifieds as well.
I'll snap a pic of the tag and post it up when I get a chance.

I have the same rear bumper. It is aftermarket. I have a matching front bumper set up to take a winch.

yeah, I'm usually the same way, but I just get sick of holding on to old parts waiting for someone to beat me down on the price to the point where it's not worth the time or pain in the @ss to negotiate for pocket change over the long haul.

I like to trade, but that hardly ever works out for small token items.

Yeah, made it home safe despite the weather.

I think I found a nice set of rollers in town locally.

I bought a front tire to hold it over. If/when the old hood sells I'll get it into some better rollers.

Thanks for the offer, and for selling me the truck!

It's coming along already.

I found a good AAM 1150 rear end for 300. That and a set of 22.5" Alcoas I found in PHX will allow the rear end to start getting mocked up. It's gonna be close. I figure I'm going to need 22" for each rear wheel out back. So at a minimum, 44" are going to have to come off the AAM 1150. Most likely even more since I think it's already much wider than the original rear.

I think I'm going to bail on the 5.7 Toyota idea in favor of a crate 350 with a 5 speed manual, Whipple supercharger, and gear drive. Much easier in the long run, and the price is right.

I notice this truck doesn't have them, but other 64's in some magazines have them.

Was there a cut-off month or year somewhere, or was it a trim package?

I'm confused.
