Ideas on how to remove stuck wheel on my 69
The passenger rear wheel on my GMC is stuck on. It is a 6 lug rally wheel. I would like to remove it with out damaging it. I have tried heat and penatrating oil and it won't budge with the help of a b.f.h. Any other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of bringing a porta-power home from work tomorrow.

I think the porta power will do it. Rim to rim? Try it just don't use a lot of pressure as you could bend the wheels. Bring it up to tension and use your BFH and just tap on the wheel with a block of wood And it should come off(sure its just rusted on there) I had one just like this years ago and that's what I did. Cheers, Pat

Is it driveable??
You could try loosening the lugnuts a little (still keeping them on) then going up and down the driveway or street slowly weaving the truck back and forth. You'll eventually feel the wheel break loose.

All I have to do is put the other wheels back on.

Sledge hitting the tire? I've had to do that in the past.

Re: Ideas on how to remove stuck wheel on my 69
I had that happen with an aluminum wheel once. I didn't want to damage anything so I loosened the adjusting wheel on the brake shoes, pulled the diff cover, pulled the bolt and the clip from the axle, and slid the axle out. Once I had the whole axle out the wheel came off pretty easy. It actually only took about 30 minutes. Gives you the opportunity to change the rearend fluid too!

I'm with Rochlow just smack the tire with a BFH and they pop right off.....and i thought this was funny.......the cornwell tool guy was at my fathers garage and one of his new tools he was showing was a 12lb sledge with a fiberglass handle and it was called BFH, and BFH was stamped in to the metal head. I was laughing when i thought some young kid is going to ask his dad what BFH meen and then he is going to have to explain it

I have done this more than once. It works fast and does not cause any damage. I just loosen the lug nuts and put in drive creep foward and jab the brakes. All of our trucks on the farm sat outside all year and this was the quickest way.

Re: Ideas on how to remove stuck wheel on my 69
I learned my lesson about using a big hammer many years ago. They've got their place but not around the wheels/rims. I broke a drum once and chipped an aluminum rim.
I do recall another vehicle that I had with a stuck wheel. I jacked the rear end up, started the engine, placed it in gear and while the rear wheel was turning used a file to carefully scrape around the center axle part. There was built up rust and grime there. I then used a solvent for rust and was able to remove it that way. If you do this be sure and chock the wheels in front and back. |

Re: Ideas on how to remove stuck wheel on my 69
Hi I have worked in a tire store for 34 years and here is some things I have done in the past. take off lugs and spray some pb blaster in all 5 holes if u have the time do that for 2 days after that put your lug back on but only 3/4 of the way go some where and do some power slides. if that doesn't work get a 4x4 long enuff so u can have a person holding each side heat the senter of the rim get it real hot then have your 2 buddy holding on the 4x4 on each side and get a big BMFH and swag away o and air up your tire to around 45 psi . If u just hit the back of the rim with the hammer u will put big dents in it we did that alot if the customer was buying new rims or had a replacement rim. hope this helps just keep at it it will come off and just walk away if u get mad. good luck my brother.

Porta-power + BFH = Success! Thanks for all of the information and comments. Another reason I love this forum.
