coil/resister?
truck is a '61 c10 with a 235. It has the resister wire from the starter to the coil. The new coil says it needs a resister. Do i need one or is it ok to hook it up like the stock one?

The purpose of the resistor is to drop the voltage to prevent arching and burning at the point contacts , so as long as your original wire only has 6 or 7 volts at the coil .it is fine with out resistor. You can run 12 volts but you will burn out the points quite regular. Thats my understanding of it

The wire from the starter to the coil is a resister bypass wire ,it only functions while cranking the engine .. Most trucks have a resistor wire ,that merges with the bypass wire at the terminal on the coil ,if the truck was points before it more than likely is a resistor wire and you dont need the external resistor ......unless it came with an external resistor ...

The wire from the starter to the coil should not be a resistor wire.It's sole purpose is to supply full 12 volts during starting only to help the engine start faster/easier.
The ignition circuit should provide about 8/9 volts in the run position after starting.This wire should be a resistor wire or ballast resistor. Mike./ |
