Does your 283 still have the original style short water pump, or has it been changed over to the long water pump?

This thread will likely get locked as this is not the place to do buying and selling, plus you need to be a subscribing member to do so on this forum.

cpp sells a bracket kit. I can say that if you go to a pick a part you can take some pics with a digital camera and see how it all fits together. Buy all the parts right there and then you know it will line up and fit.

I too am trying to set up a 283 but haven't found the right combination of two groove pulleys so far... mine don't quite line up as the pictures reveal.

Do you shim the bottom out to get them to line up?

Hey bob,

I am not sure how this forum works, but since your message got to me, I will respond. In my earlier post, I was just pointing out what an early power steering pump looked like. You have one. I have observed that various combinations of harmonic balancers, lower pulleys and water pumps and pulleys do not necessarily line up.

Your upper pic shows an early water pump with a single groove pulley, running on a lower double groove pulley on the balancer with the outer groove powering the pump. This I think is the original design.

Your second and third pics show a newer water pump with a two groove fan pulley, which doesn't line up with the lower two groove pulley. I don't know why you have a two groove fan pulley or where it came from, because the water pump / fan runs fine with one belt.

But back to your original question which is a coincidence. For what ever reason, the lower single pulley and the fan pulley on my truck did not line up by about 0.080". I shimmed out the lower pulley with one inch OD washers and it seems to be just fine. My truck is a 64 C-20 bare bones no power anything. 283 engine, 456 rear, and a granny four speed. It steers real well because I have bias ply tires. The front ones are Load Range D Chinese highway tread trailer tires. 5 1/2 inch wide tread and run at 70 psi. This leaves a very small footprint. Radials run like tank treads. I do not recommend this approach for areas where the road gets slippery, but in San Diego, the set up is just fine for an around town work'in truck.
