Alternator / PS bracket problem
I know I saw this posted by someone else but ive tried and tried to find it through the search to no avail. So anyways, Ive run into this problem in picture #1...
Sorry for the blurry pic, but I think it provides adequate details. The alternator isnt lining up with the bracket properly, and the Alt fan is hitting the bracket. Ive tried different lower brackets for the alternator and tried shims for the PS bracket to move it to a different angle, but nothing has worked. Ive thought about taking the fan off and notching the the blades so that the bracket fits behind the blades. Or, I was wondering if there were Shims to place behind the alt fan so that its out further to give room for the bracket to sit behind the blades of the fan. Any of you guys have an idea on how to adjust the alt or PS bracket to align the hole for the alternator. and for the second picture the Cooling fan is hitting the PS pump so I was thinking do they make a smaller fan than a 18" that im currently using. unfortunately I cant use a spacer for the fan because as of right now the engine is on the wrong mount positions (V8 instead of the V6) it should be. When my truck is fully assembled the cooling fan sits about 1 inch from the radiator. I know I have to move it at some point but I was wondering for now is it possible to AGAIN notch the fans so that they would miss the PS pump. or would that reduce the effectiveness of the fan blades too badly? I want to have the engine moved to the proper mount locations but I cant afford to do it at this time.

With your engine in the forward location you may run into additional clearance problems. But where your alignment fix is a short / long water pump brackets n pulleys along with crank pulley combinations. You need all of one short or long complete set to match your water pump. Another alternative for you could be a serpentine setup off a later model V6 or V8. Or just go to electric fans with a custom shroud.

Don't do anything to the fan it's self are you will have all kinds of problems. They are balanced and it will where the water pump bearing's out in no time.
You need to extend the fan that's a easy fix. They have spacers at the parts store for this. The brackets are like stated. You either need all long pump are short pump brackets to make everything line up. ![]() ![]()

I may be wrong but i have always seen the power steering pump in the lower position and the alternator in the upper postion. Could this be what is the problem?

It looks like you have enough room to put a spacer behind the fan blade to extend it out like Andy says. I cant tell just where you need to go with the alt fan but you can space the pulley or fan out by removeing them & placeing the lock washer from behind the nut to behind the pulley or fan. You can add an additional washer but you cant space the fan too far from the alt body.

Firedog ~ I think you may be thinking of the 350 set up but im dealing with a pain in the but 250 haha
Wrench Bender ~ thanks for the idea on the Alt fan, that was one of the problems I had "hidden" in my scatter-brained ramble OP The pulleys are all perfectly aligned the problem im having with the "alignment is with the circled area in the picture. thats the alignment problem I was originally talking about in the OP, well aside from the fan hitting the PS pulley which can be remedied with a spacer that Andy suggested. In the second picture of the OP I was showing how the fan blade hit the PS pulley, not that the pulleys were misaligned. Well like I had said in the OP the engine is in the wrong position and sits approx. 6-8 inches closer to the radiator than it normally would so im not sure how well a spacer will work in this situation. I saw on Summit racing that they have a 15" 6 bladed fan and that should clear the pulley in it final position, but I was wondering if the 6 bladed would be as good as the 4 bladed original even though it is 2" smaller in Diameter? I also went to get new belts for the double pulley setup that include the power steering pulley and was wondering how the belts are looped around the pulleys. I have one belt looped around the Crank shaft pulley, Water pump, and the alternator on the inside closest to the engine groove. My question is for the do I look the second belt around the Crank shaft, water pump and power steering pulleys on the outside groove? or do I just do around the crank shaft and power steering? just to make it easier to understand i guess lol question #1~ would a smaller 15" 6 bladed fan work as well a the original 17" 4 bladed fan? ( this would fix the clearance problem with the PS pulley) question #2 how are the belts looped through properly on a double belt setup on a Inline 6 250? question #3 how would I find the correct belt length if Im clueless on what size belt I need? I TOTALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S ADVICE AND PATIENCE DUE TO MY JUMPING BACK AN FORTH AND CONFUSING EVERYONE ![]()

At the very least I mild update, with being so frustrated with the power steering bracket not allowing the alternator to line up correctly . I just removed the whole thing and just started from the beginning again and just redo it slowly and while the bracket was off I noticed that there was a kink in the bracket and with some hammering and some bending I actually got it to where its working perfectly. ONE small victory, one LOOOONG war left!

I moved my alternator from the lower mount to the "proper" exhaust manifold mount and have never looked back. Of course, I had to find a ramshorn exhaust manifold with the two holes on the driver side and curved to dump into the exhaust pipe all on a 283 mounted on the Inline 6 engine mounts!
