GMC Suburban Questions ....

Hey all ...

Thinking about purchasing the '62 that '66burban' has for sale...

If it happens (sweet talking wifee) would like to convert the rear suspension over to trailing arm....and I have a spare clean '63 3/4 ton rolling chassis for parts.

Will the trailing arm crossmember from the '63 interchange into the X-frame ??

Wondering if swaping the frames would be a better idea ??

I could correct the wheelbase, and graft on the rear frame horns for bumper mounting ??

Yes, I am going to get the '63 BBW going first.....

Thanks guys ...

Re: GMC Suburban Questions ....

If it were mine, I would shorten the '63 C20 chassis and use that if you can. For me the '63 and up chassis' are much easier to upgrade to my liking. Yes I know I am always talking about keeping your original frame, but this is an instance where it is not difficult to do, and is a worthwhile upgrade. Of course keep in mind the DMV issues.

Dont think you will have a problem adding the trailing arm xmember to 66....

So....swapping in the xmember is not as easy as 1 2 3 ?

I wouldnt mind swapping frames ... Not a big deal, really.

I dont think the CA DMV will mind either....

Re: GMC Suburban Questions ....

I'm really not sure just how easy it would be. I would have to look at the '62 GMC frame I have at the shop to get an idea. I guess I'm just a little biased as I don't care for the '60-'62 X-member frames.

Sorry I didn't catch that it was a GMC ..... Leafs ????
Yeap ..... Thats why I was asking about converting to trailing arms.

I dont mind leafs in my trailer or Stupid Duty that'll haul anything I throw at it .... But in this I would want coils .....

Was 62 the first year for leafs? Both my 60 GMC truck and my 60 GMC suburban had/have trailing arms.

Re: GMC Suburban Questions ....

I believe the '63-'72 GMC's had leaf springs as standard equipment, Trailing arms and coils were an option.

John, I'll see if I can remember to take a pic of the '62 GMC frame I have so you can see how the trailing arms mount.

Re: GMC Suburban Questions ....

Thanks for the pics !

That center section closely matches that of GM fullsize.....ie Impala frame.

Billy (66 burban) called me today and informed me that the rear is in fact coil sprung.

So, I can run that for a while...but still like the idea of the frame swap.
