Having a truck to complete a truck...

How many of you guys have a functional pick up to do the things you need, while fininshing your project? Just thought 'I'd ask so I don't seem crazy, but Its summer time now, I really am striding to complete my project to use the truck for errands, but realistically it doesn't look like its gonna happen. My thoughts were to buy an 88-98 since I like them, to do everyday funtional stuff, but thought if I did buy one, then I wouldn't want to finish my project.... I got Brick, dirt, mulch, lumber, you name it to do this summer and a suburban aint cutting it...not to mention not having a garage and the appaerance of a project isnt too pleasing to the eye when looking at my property...probably should'v passed on the project, but when u come across a square body in new yourk with ALL good metal, what do you do?

My personal every day truck is a Ford F150 plus i have a small trailer and the project truck became a garage queen since its been completed

My 72 has been in the bodyshop for 14 months awaiting its turn so I found a 74 Chevy short stepper been in a barn the last 20 something years so Im going to try to get it running today .I miss my old ugly truck.

I do just what you're thinking, I have a 97 gmc 1500 as a backup/ parts getter/ dirty work truck, my 86 is the project/ easy work truck lol lumber moving furniture ect.
Pretty much have to have 2 vehicles if you wanna run older stuff!

I wrecked my truck march 4, I was lucky to have another truck around to use. I'm anxious to get mine back together though, miss it alot.
I would just use a trailer if I were you though.

Yes, and its even worse when you have 2 trucks down and need a third to pickup a transmission or an engine!

I have 4 daily driver/ project trucks,so if one goes down it's just a matter of about 15-20 minutes to swap tools and supplies to the next one and I am ready to go! In all 4 trucks probably have less than 7 grand into them total...Aren't old squares great!!!

I vote trailer also. I have a daily driver truck and a couple of trailers. I use them all the time for work.

I brought the 84 k20 to use parts off it for the k30, trouble is I put a motor in the k20 and now I using it and just brought a 84 C10 to do a 6.2 diesel transplant, now the k30 will never get finished lol

I have a 16ft trailer a jeep and a cadillac escalade to go along with my project truck. Used to have a few trucks but wife made me get rid of them when we built the new house so i wouldnt junk it up till my shop was done. So this is what i have left. lol

i have a 99 tacoma with a 4 cylinder for my everyday use cheap on gaz 4x4 and can even haul my trailer while im building my big k35 454 witch always beat me at alcoolism.

yeah thx guys. I'm driving myself nuts looking at all that has to get done around my house. I have an 05 burb,but thats mostly a troop carrier(family) and grocery getter. Next thing I know I'm going to Home Depot with it and scratching the plastic panels up, and I hate it. I thought about the trailer, but my burb isnt set up for it. So money going into getting a hitch and trailer could go towards a truck maybe. My wife got real real upset last week on how much time I spend on the truck and other things have been neglected. So we made a deal. I work midnights. So on my days off, I will work on the house, until 1700, after that, I'm allowed to work on my truck. I think it was a ploy, because come 1700, I'm engulfed, and have to pry myself off of what I'm working on, and she knows that. Trying to be patient but I may have to just "pull the trigger".....I am quite impulsive, so I'm trying to justify but be patient at the same time.....

A hitch is not that expensive at all and around here 6'x10' trailers (single axle 3500lb axle) are in the $500 range unless you get one that has the 4' expanded metal walls. Even those are under $1000 though. Storing a trailer is a much smaller footprint if you're working with limited parking spaces and it's easier to secure a trailer from thieving sort of people.
Buying another truck in the same price range is going to be something that will require work just to be able to make it where it can go to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up a load of something.
Heck you could probably find a homemade pickup bed trailer as well. Those go for about $300 around here, $400 if they were made from a 3/4 ton.

I guess it just depends on if you want another truck that you have to spend time working on or something you can just hook up and go to work with. Heck for all I know you have $5000 for the budget on this. That makes an actual truck sound better since it'd be a nicer truck.

Just last weekend I had to load my 4 wheeler up and take in for service (transmission went POOF). Lets pretend my 87 is not sitting in the shop with the top of the engine torn apart for a cam swap. I could have gotten 3 buddies to help me push the 4 wheeler up in to the bed (maybe) and went to town with it. But it was just as easy to hook up my 16' trailer, use the electric winch to load the 4 wheeler, strap it down and haul it in to town. Sadly my 05 has one of those 5' beds on it and the 4 wheeler will not fit.

And to help if you need it, GM sells a "Platform Kit" trailer hitch for your suburban. Comes with the hitch, receptacle and bolts, cost is ~$250. Of course you could probably get a generic UHaul hitch or something, but those GM kits are nice. I sell a lot of them.
