Glove Box Label - Need Help

Hey Gents,

I'm trying to figure out my glove box label, I would like to know what rear end is in the truck for sure, but I would also like to know any other information that you guys can pull out of these codes. Thank you very much. I appreciate it (All these pictures are of the same label).

Re: Glove Box Label - Need Help

Thanks Motornut. Yeah- these codes are vary informative. I created a word document file where I'm trying to gather all these codes for my truck. I'm trying to find the blank ones abover from hatzie's reply, but I'm not finding them all. Some may be outdated or not in these GM RPO code sites for various reasons. Thanks for that one though. I appreaciate it budy. Thanks

Re: Glove Box Label - Need Help

HJ145960 tells me:

H = 1987 model year (confirmed by the fact that it is an LO5 TBI)
J = Janesville assembly plant
145960 = build sequence number

Model code CR10703 tells me:
C = Chevy
R = 2wd
1 = 10 series 1/2 ton
07 = short wheel base
03 = regular cab pickup

None of the remaining blank RPO codes are really that significant, with the exception of XFN, YFN and ZFN - which are tire codes (X = front, Y = rear, Z = spare); FN = the specific tire size, tread and sidewall type, which I don't know off the top of my head.

Here is the info kit from the GM Heritage Center archive. This will cover all the RPO codes relative to your model year, as well as additional info on sales packages and option content available.

Re: Glove Box Label - Need Help

Thanks Keith - that gmheritagecenter website is very informative. I'm glad my rpo label is still in tact. Prior trucks that i had did not have them, so it's cool to check out the original options. Thanks again.

Re: Glove Box Label - Need Help

Having the benefit of looking at the documents now:

FN = P235/75R15 All season, White lettered

RPO codes do get recycled, so you have to have a list from the right era or they don't always make sense.

I checked my book from April of 1998 and none of the blank codes were in there, with the exception of the YA9 axle.

Re: Glove Box Label - Need Help

I thought RPO numbers were re-cycled but I've never had confirmation from someone that worked at GM. The first list with blanks came from the 79-91 parts books. The ones with question marks are from lists that don't make reference to years used so they're suspect.

I tried Compnines' VIN lookup. http://www.compnine.com/

It looks like their 1980 on database is back online. My 09 Impala and 00 GMC pull up a full option list that matches the SPID in both.

This is all I got from the VIN on his SPID...

"Nothing found for VIN Number 1GCER14K5HJ145960. It may be that we don't have it in the database yet, but be sure to check that you have typed it correctly. Be sure to try back often, we're constantly updating the database."

Yep - a great example is RPO LS6

In 1970 it was a fairly healthy 454 cu in big block;

by the 2000's is was one of the variants in the "LS" small block series.

I had made this comment one time while on a Powertrain calibration ride.

Something to the effect of "LS6 was once the king of the hill big block RPO, and now it stands for some weenie small block".

My host replied "...Seymore - may I remind you that you are on a "weenie small block" calibration ride?"

(lol)
