HEI Distributor Cap Replacement, no going so well
I'm new here and tried to search the forum for this answer but I can't find anything to help. I have a 1978 K10, 350, that has a 1983 Silverado Body on it. I've had it 2 weeks and yesterday started through all the traditional tune up steps. Plugs, Wires, Distributor cap/rotor, PVC value and such. The distributor cap and coil has 5 plug-in connectors (correct word?). 3 from the coil pretty much match up to the 3 slots in the cap and then those 3 wires fit in the molded plug. I could have messed those up but they seem to so clearly fit the new cap I think they're right. My concern is there are 2 other connectors that are at the end, further out of the 3 wire plug and I only have 1 wire left to connect to either connector. So which do I hookup to? I've tried both and the truck won't start. I've also left it off and it won't start either.
I've tripled checked the spark wire locations, firing order. Several times last night and today. |

Re: HEI Distributor Cap Replacement, no going so well
Thanks for the direction above. One more quick question but I think I need to start a new thread on fuel delivery. But real quick I got the wire on the BAT post and saw it clearly marked on the distributor so I think I was just too frustrated last night to see it. My battery cable was then loose so I wasn't getting juice, tightened that. Now it will crank just fine but I'm not getting fuel at the carburetor. Is there any way I could have messed something up related to that? Maybe a vacuum hose I'm missing? I don't see any wires heading back to the tank I could have loosened changing plug wires and distributor cap. I think the answer is it's just a coincidence and I just need to get a fuel pump.
It's a 78 350 Quadrajet though I can't be sure of the year of the engine. |

Re: HEI Distributor Cap Replacement, no going so well
When i start a rig that's sat I fill the float chamber from the vent tube with good clean fuel. It'll run long enough on one or two fills to pump fuel up from the tank.
1978 is mechanical fuel pump unless you know otherwise. If running on two float chamber fills doesn't prime the pump it could be sucking air through a leak in the fuel lines... or the pump diaphragm is bad.
