Viair 480c leaking through breather?

It'll biuld air and air up, but airs coming back out the breather tube on it. Is it bad? lol. It's basically new, used for low low miles on my truck.

Re: Viair 480c leaking through breather?

When you say breather tube, do you mean the intake port? If so, there is a check valve at the end of the leader, which stop pressure from going back against the piston, etc.. This may have gone bad, which can be caused if it is tightened too much when going into the tank. It may not be shutting off completely, because the plunger is getting stuck when trying to go back after it shuts off.

This may work.... but you can try taking the end of the leaser out of the tank, re-applying sealant, and thread back into the tank snugly, but not cranked down. Spray with soapy water to test for leaks at the threads. If it is bubbling up and leaking, then give it a 1/4 turn. It shouldn't take much to seal up. You still might be able to use that check valve if it isn't crushed down too far. If it still leaks, I would try a new check valve.

Ok, I'm more of a body guy/rock crawler/hot rod builder lol. The leaser being the one way at the the tank? Let's air in but not out? The inlet tube, yes, that's where it's leaking off at. Where's the check valve and there's something I did to cause this? So I don't do it again lol.

Re: Viair 480c leaking through breather?

The leader hose is the braided 3/8" line heading from the top of the compressor head into the tank. At the end of that leader hose, just before it goes into the tank, there is a check valve. This check valve just lets air out one way. This will keep from the pressure in the tank off the piston of the compressor.

The intake is located on the lower portion, on the crank case housing. Most of the time there is a metal filter screwed into the port directly. In your case, it sounds like you have it remote mounted. This means the tube routes from the intake port on the crank case to the filter located somewhere else. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be leaking out from there.

If the check valve is bad, it is leaking back into the compressor, causing it to leak all the way back out the intake tube. A bad check valve is usually caused by over tightening the check valve when threading it into your tank. Over tightening cause the fittings to crush down on the plunger, making it stick. Most time, this mean a new one is needed. You can try though, taking it out, then re-installing snugly..... just enough to make it seal. You can check to see if it sealed correctly using soapy water. If leaking, it will bubble up. If that is the case, just turn a 1/4 turn and see if that seals it. If not, then remove, re-apply sealant and reinstall again. Loctite 545 is a great sealant for air ride systems.

These check valves can be replaced if needed. It my be stuck too bad where you need a new one. I would try removing and re-installing as mentioned first, before buying a new one. If it ends up, you do need one, then I can get those for you.

Re: Viair 480c leaking through breather?

One friend was telling me to buy a rebuild kit, another was also and offered to buy my Viair. So, since I was thinking about it only being the line and one way valve I wanted to ask a more intelligent bunch of people. Thanks for the help, I'll pull the leader hose and see if the valves stuck.
