Tick, Tick, Tick (Lifter, Rocker, Exhaust) Video—CHARLOTTE SHOPS?
Hi Guys,
350/4spd '82. New plugs, wires, distributor, oil, and timing. Running awesome. PS belt committed suicide. Replaced belt, developed tick, tick, tick. Awful. Tried with both belt on and off (ruling out defective PS pulley ...my first thread... ). What now? Anyone know a shop in Charlotte I can call? New to the area. Thanks. 350 Lifter/Rocker Tick

Get one of the stethoscopes from the parts store like O'Reilly's. Fire up the truck and try to track down the noise. They have helped me diagnose a few things on the truck.

did it make the noise prior to the suicide of the PS belt?... sure sounds like lifters need adjusting to me..

I don't know anything about lifter adjustment. I have a manual but don't trust myself with something this fine (more of a fabrication guy myself). Safe to drive? Safe to drive to shop? Any shop recommendations?

Cool, THX. I guess that would help me rule out the exhaust leak if I could pinpoint it to the cylinders. I'm pretty sure it's the the #1/#3 cylinder or exhaust port.

Re: Tick, Tick, Tick (Lifter, Rocker, Exhaust) Video—CHARLOTTE SHOPS?
it sounds to fast for a lifter tap. not saying its not as my 86 has one that is bad now and it tapps all the time. but mine came on slow wine then slight tap then tap. sounds like my 454 did when it broke a push rod would be worth tacking the valve covers off and checking all rockers for a loose one and springs. do you know what cam is in it? and are you a hard driver?? high rpms and heavy throttle?

I'd be up for taking the valve covers off to look around, but I'm worried I'd screw it up to much to be even able to drive it somewhere (look where replacing the stupid PS belt got me). Crap.

Ok nevermind I just watched the video. You should try and run it for a couple seconds with no belts to rule that out tho.

Any ideas what I possibly could have screwed up replacing belts?

The more that I listen to the video makes me think that a good check of all your accessories should be in order. When the belt came off it could have left something or knocked something out of place. I have seen it take a couple days for it to become apparent. The first thing that I would check is the fan and the shroud. Make sure they are good and tight with nothing hitting the fan blades.

Busted connecting rod in #5. Old time hot rodder said "were you drag racing it?"
I wish... $900 out the door with new rods, lifters, etc. Hrrmmm...put money into this or buy something built...

Re: Tick, Tick, Tick (Lifter, Rocker, Exhaust) Video—CHARLOTTE SHOPS?
Sorry for outcome.... You have to decide if a new motor is worth it to you? $900 is the on the low side, where-as a new crate motor with more horsepower can be several thousands. I'm new to the Charlotte area also, so I don't know of a good shop either. Good luck

Re: Tick, Tick, Tick (Lifter, Rocker, Exhaust) Video—CHARLOTTE SHOPS?
It was a broken PUSH rod, sorry. Two, in fact, in #5.
I went ahead and had them do new rods and lifters. They pulled the the intake and checked the cams. No problems there. Work done. All buttoned up. Sounds nice. I need a Tach in a bad way (lol) Now it seems that synchro for gear 2 is wearing out. Oh well. It's a hobby truck. But that power-train fix was my bagging-it money.
