Question 51 mounting problems

Hi
Im fairly new to the forum. Ive got a 51 chevy 3400 body im mounting on a 79 chevy 2500. im having troubles getting my cab mounted square. Is it true that model of chevy has an offset front axle? What would be a good mounting bracket for the front of my cab. it sits about 10in higher than the original cab mounting brackets. any advice or suggestions would be great

Re: 51 mounting problems

That is the primary reason that there are somewhere between 50 and 100 posts on this board suggesting to others wanting to do the same thing not to do it.

I saw one sitting on one of those frames at an auction a couple of weeks ago but the batteries went dead in my camera and when I got more batteries out of my truck it was gone but it was one of the most cobbled up messes that I have seen lately. That was a two wheel drive truck though.

I'm going to assume that you are using a 4x4 frame because of what you said about the axle.

You have to figure out where the center line of the frame is and mark it front to rear and figure out where the center line of the cab and nose are and mark those.
Then you center the cab on the frame. You probably already have the fore aft thing figured out as you have to center the front wheels in the wheel wells there.

You will either have to space the cab up several inches off the frame as you are finding out or cut out the front inner fenders to clear the kickup in the frame as the later frame is several inches higher in the front than it is in the section under the cab.

Re: 51 mounting problems

Take your time and make it a clean installation with some thought put into it. That extra bit of time spent here and there is what makes the difference between a so so job and a nice truck.

Re: 51 mounting problems

My truck is mounted on a 75 3/4 ton frame. The cab is mounted on top of a built up frame work that the cab sits on. Mine rides good except for the 38.5 mud tires.
