[70 beast]

well its been a month and there has been some progress.

Ill just explain pics as I go.

Did some carb work.
added the offroad needles/seats, as well as some other lil things inside to help with bowl to bowl transfer, and added a crossover tube.
reason I did this, was these carbs are notorious for flooding at even the smallest of angle. a buddy of mine has the same carb, did the mods, and now has had nothing but great performance out of the carb, offroad wise.


crossover steering was next, got a set of 1 arm and 1 cap from a vendor on pirate for cheap. as far as quality, Im more than happy, and the price wasn't too shabby either. $100 for both pieces.
I went spring-less too to help eliminate that pesky death wobble.
for a pitman arm, I went to my local pick n pull, and grabbed the pitman arm off a mid 80s xj along with the sector shaft off a 2wd Chevy and a tie-rod assembly off a mid 80s blazer.

I reamed the pitman for tre's then cut the 80s k5 tie-rod down to ~34", sleeved it with a 2' piece of 3/4" cold-rolled steel rod, and welded it back together. and got the correct ends for the pitman arm and steering arm






then i fought with the front u joint for the longest time. the Chevy shaft i have runs a 1310 u joint but the dodge d60 uses a 7260 series yoke, which is just a hair bigger than a 1310 joint. so i went and did some research, bought the wrong joint, did some MORE research, went to Napa, and got the right one...fought with trying to install it with just basic tools, got it in, then installed the shaft, thinking it was going to be fine....but just in-case i went and got 1350 series yoke.


so that bring us to today. took her for a spin and hes the results....
*front shaft bound up when i tried 4wd(granted it was on the street, i dont think it should have done that) took that off and found that the yoke on the driveshaft was contacting the yoke on the axle...so either some degree shims (dodge d60s have little to no angle so that's why) or i can clearance the yoke on both ends just a little to help with that.

*i think the rear shaft is doing the same but at the tcase end...same solution as the front
*needs shocks...rides like a caddy...but sways like a drunkard , just gotta get my buddy (works for ruffstuff) to get me some shock tabs and weld em on.

so other than that stuff, I feel very comfortable with how the beast has turned out. Stance is good, motors running strong, and I can actually see myself going wheeling real soon!!!

Update time yet again!

its been a crazy month but it gives me great joy to say its wheeling time!!!

painted the hood, mounted shocks, got the front drive shaft working better (not perfect) and insured it...took her out this morning for a shakedown run

oh and i picked up a mint condition, Miller Challenger 172 mig welder, with a tank, extra hd gauge extension, helmet, and golves for $400...damn it feels good to have one finally


I also rescued this guy,Lucky, 2yr old rat/fox terrier...he loves to go riding





I took it easy on big stuff till I can get a cage started...Safety first.

Nice jimmy. What exhaust manafolds are you running? Yours don't look like ramhorns. I'm looking for other options.
